If a Vanilla Cupcake-inspired perfume is called a gourmand, what about an orange-scented perfume? Can it also be thought of as a gourmand? After all, we eat them both.
Angela Flander established her perfume house in 1985. Now, in the present day, her daughter, Kate Evans, brings to life the new bottle elixir. Her latest birth brings a new face of gourmand perfume, Shantung Dream Eau de Parfum. Drawing inspiration from a shared family history of textiles translated into perfumes and the sunny notes of Orange.
Well, the idea behind a gourmand fragrance strongly revolves around our love for sweets and the joy of devouring these jaw-dripping dessert flavours. But the term “gourmand” in French refers to “someone who deeply enjoys eating rich and tasty food.” These sweet, rich perfumes are a relatively recent addition to the fragrance menu.
Have you ever wondered why sweet notes are so appealing to most of us and the scientific reasoning behind it?
First, it is worthwhile looking into why sweet notes in perfumes are so alluring. Perfumer Jérôme di Marino signifies that an increase in the dopamine pleasure hormone is connected to the impact of sugar on the brain.
“This hormone is responsible for the feeling of well-being you get when you eat something sweet,” he explains. And, for this reason, sweet fragrances bring us into a comfort zone of happiness, he stresses. Impossible to resist them…”
-Perfumer Jérôme di Marino (House of Mane)
Alongside these notes with lactose facets, i.e. milky facets, are reminiscent of this, breastfeeding, therefore creamy scent heightens emotions such as comfort and closeness. These are just a couple of reasons why this style of fragrance is so popular right now.
Here, with her newest scent, Kate Evans seems to have crafted both sweetness and sophistication in a single fragrance by adding more elegance to this new face of a gourmand perfume. Sharp, bright sunlight pours into the scent via its citrus facet yet follows through. with warmth and comfort
This elixir opens with notes of Neroli and Petitgrain. Well, this says a lot, as both are signature citrus scents yet exhibit floral tones with some other undertones.
The rich scent of Neroli comes from the orange blossom of the bitter Orange tree, bringing floral, citrussy, and green notes alongside distinct notes of honey and spices.
Petitgrain, the oil extracted from the leaves and green twigs of the bitter Orange tree, besides having floral and citrus undertones, has a tartness with a hint of wood; it has a rich, nuanced, green scent.
The full, zesty, juicy orange fruit scent comes almost like a marmalade roundness with sweet, fresh, and even rich bitterness from utilizing not just one oil of Orange origin but more; leaves, flowers and twigs.
Surprisingly, the heart note of this perfume carries the mystery behind the new face of this gourmand, a floral sensation which is sourced from the Gardenia flower. This flower’s creamy lavishness and sensual elements are hard to find and expensive to use in perfumery but bring a sublime femininity which sits here with Jasmine Sambac, sweet Orange and green Fig. This brings the opulence to the heart that you would expect from a gourmand perfume without being overly sweet.
And for its final flourish, this is another part of the magic, bringing soothing comfort and warmth to a bright opening.
The perfume rests on the base notes of soft Sandalwood, creamy Tonka bean, deep sweet, woody and rich Amber alongside balsamic, cinnamic, and woody, Tolu with a delicate hint of powdery musky warm roundness of Ambrettolide.
This floral amber perfume is also a reminiscence of Mediterranean summers. With this scent, Kate treasures memories of Orange blossoms floating on a warm breeze, the feel of her sun-kissed skin, and the warmth of baked terracotta tiles beneath bare feet. This new perfume seamlessly intertwines with Eastern inspirations for her. hence the reference to Shantung silk.
“I have always loved the touch and texture of fabrics and Shantung is no exception. Its slightly imperfect luxury speaks to me. It celebrates the artisan, something that is still handcrafted yet special, and despite its subtly irregular texture is the gold standard of silk fabrics…”
-Angela Flander’s owner and perfumer Kate Evans
Shantung silk has a beautiful, uneven texture to the touch. It is a hand-woven, luxurious silk fabric, often used for wedding gowns. It originates from the Chinese province of Shandong, hence where it gets its name.
From the unusual feel of the fabric to the refreshing use of citrus notes to make a gourmand fragrance, this new scent is as majestic and as refreshingly beautiful as it sounds.
