If Cane and Magic Meet: New Mythical Furniture Rise
[publishpress_authors_box]
Imagine a young musician wandering through the streets and searching for something. Maybe new inspiration for his music. Maybe something else. He sees a little market down the road. He doesn’t mind going there, it’s not like he has something better to do at the moment. Looking at the different market stalls, suddenly, something catches his attention, sitting on the stall of a seller; waiting for him. A beautiful Pan Flute made of cane. It never crossed his mind that this material could be for an instrument, or for that matter, anything else. But there were more objects made of cane. Art, jewellery, sculptures, and even furniture. He buys his new instrument. On his way home, he thinks about this material and its function. Art? furniture? Why not redecorate his home with it? Well, for that purpose, what’s better than the new Cane Collection by VIYA? Find out more in If Cane and Magic Meet, New Mythical Furniture Rise

Cane is a timeless and sustainable material that continues to inspire contemporary designers thanks to its natural charm and eco-conscious qualities. Its rapid regeneration and minimal processing make it a low-impact renewable resource. It’s been harvested from the outer bark of the fast-growing rattan vine that’s native to Southeast Asia. It offers the perfect balance between beauty, lightness, and durability.
It also has the amazing ability to be turned, twisted, and manipulated into amazing shapes and artworks. Look at the striking creations of Aurélie Hoegy. She makes magical art with natural fibres that are meticulously coiffed into an oversized daybed that holds court like a matriarch. Cane can also become a form of jewellery, as in Tripura, where it is split into strands as bright as ivory, then tenderly interwoven and intertwined into delicate adornments.

The new VIYA Cane collection is designed by Vikram Goyal. It breathes new life into the time-honoured craft of cane furniture, thanks to its inspiration from centuries-old weaving traditions, and is rooted in sustainability.
Dating back to the 7th century in India, cane weaving was more than just a technique; a celebration of both artistry and nature. Strips of rattan cane were soaked, softened, and handwoven into fluid forms that created light, strong, and imbued with timeless elegance.
The Viya Cane Collection honours this rich heritage while reimagining it through a modern lens. So each piece has its own significance and story. All inspired by diverse elements of Indian history, myths, and fables.

First, there is Majuli. Brass and smoothly woven cane in sinuous forms for lamps and trolleys inspired by the river island of Majuli in Assam. The following forms echo the rhythm of rivers and the craftsmanship of the region.

Then, there is the Chakra Collection. Celebrating India’s deep connection to its artisanal traditions, Chakra presents a collection of sofas, chairs, stools, consoles, and mirrors crafted in natural and black cane. Expertly woven and knotted into sublime forms, each piece is inspired by the body’s energy points. It results in balanced and sculptural design that embraces both harmony and spirit.

Then, there is the Assam Brass & Cane Trolley. A refined blend of bright forged brass and finely woven cane from Northeast India. This piece highlights Viya’s signature fusion of functionality and sophistication.

Last but not least, the Barware Collection. Named after the craft-rich states of North East India, Mizoram, Manipur, and Nagaland, these ice and champagne buckets combine hand-beaten brass and robust cane in a seamless blend of tradition and style.

What was a simple search for inspiration turned into a brand, new discovery. Not only for a new instrument but also for a material rich in heritage and function.
