Suddenly, salvation hits the shelves in the form of the first digital watch: Hamilton\u2019s Pulsar. The digital numbers were powered by a new technology called light-emitting diodes (LEDs), which were essentially lights that were activated by electric currents. To celebrate this shiny legacy, Hamilton has announced the return of the Pulsar brand with the limited edition PSR MTX.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Going-Digital3.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"580\" height=\"386\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Going-Digital3.jpg?resize=580%2C386&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-104933\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Going-Digital3.jpg?w=1024&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Going-Digital3.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Going-Digital3.jpg?resize=768%2C512&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-secondary-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">This retro digital watch does away with the archaic LED display of the original in favour of a dazzling liquid crystal display (LCD), which uses the light changing properties of liquid crystals to make a vibrant image.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-secondary-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">The Hamilton PSR MTX comes as part of a collaboration with the new Matrix film, <em>Matrix Resurrections<\/em> (2021), starring Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Ann Moss. While Hamilton may have sold the first digital watch, the first LCD watch was sold by Seiko in 1972: the Seiko cal 0614.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-secondary-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">From then on, LCD watches dominated the digital playing field and even the silver screen. You may remember a bulky watch on the arm of Marty McFly, the famous protagonist of <em>Back to the Future <\/em>(1985). This LCD device was the Casio CA53W Twincept Databank, which had a calculator, calendar, stopwatch, and an alarm.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Back To The Future (1985) Theatrical Trailer - Michael J. Fox Movie HD\" width=\"580\" height=\"326\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qvsgGtivCgs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-secondary-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">While those features may have been cool in 1985, they weren\u2019t very useful in the 2010s when many people had a smartphone that could do all that and more. Digital watches seemed to be obsolete in this new era, or at least that was the case until 2015 heralded the release of the Apple Watch   Series 1.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=MMdQ-gWBNZE\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-secondary-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">These new LCD smartwatches revolutionized and reinvigorated the digital watch trade by connecting them to smartphones.
