As we slowly shed off layers of knits and coats and bid a temporary goodbye to the grey days of winter, it is the perfect time of the year to bring brightness into our world and revamp our makeup routines with some long-needed colour. In this seemingly extra long winter, the beauty world has been filled with the 90\u2019s supermodel-inspired smokey look. Dating back to 1974, scientists discovered red to be one of the most stimulating colours. In pop culture alone, the power of the colour red is constantly associated with desire, romance, saints and sinners, and even emotions like anger and love. Red is complex and multifaceted, perhaps that is why the colour has become such a cult classic in beauty for centuries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The timeless red lip has been a beauty staple in French culture; French beauty is infamous for its effortless balance of looking both undone and fine-tuned. For the cool French girls, imperfections are necessary to complete the look and makeup is used to enhance, not cover. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1924, Gabrielle Chanel released her groundbreaking red lipstick formula. The texture was a key factor in their success: a creamy balm with intense coverage, but still comfortable and light to wear. The first shade was a classic red hue based on Gabrielle Chanel\u2019s favourite shade and was encased in an ivory flacon. Their new eyeshadow palette, for example, Les 4 Rouges Yeux Et Joues<\/a><\/em>, comes in two shades: a corally Tendresse<\/em> (pictured above) suitable for during the day, and a darker more seductive Carcat\u00e9re<\/em> perfect for a night out in the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To accompany the shadow palettes, the brand has also released the Rouge Allure Velvet<\/a><\/em> (pictured above) in 22 shades which include Libre<\/em>: a soft mauve beige, L\u00e9gendaire<\/em>: delicate dusty orange, Rouge Vie<\/em>: a warm sienna red, and Essentielle<\/em>: an iconic and bold dusty red. The variety of reds allows for all skin tones to find a perfect match.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
