It’s interesting to know that book covers, in some form or another, have accompanied manuscripts since time immemorial. In ancient civilizations like Egypt and Mesopotamia, tablets and scrolls were adorned with ornate designs and symbols. The covers served both functional and aesthetic purposes, there to protect the precious words within and also a hint at the essence of the narrative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was with the advent of the codex (sheets of vellum, papyrus, or other materials), in the early centuries AD, the modern concept of the book began to take shape. It was at this time that bookbinding evolved into a distinct art form during the medieval era. Monastic scribes and skilled artisans crafted hand-stitched leather covers, often embellished with gold leaf and intricate patterns, turning each manuscript into a unique masterpiece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Soon after with the printing press revolutionizing book production, cloth became a popular alternative to leather. Cloth bindings brought a new dimension of artistic expression, with publishers experimenting with various colours and designs to entice readers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even though the history of printing in England can be traced back to the 15th century, books were still seen as luxury items by the beginning of the 19th century and therefore needed protection as they made their way to personal libraries across the country. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thus, the 20th century saw the rise of dust jackets, printed on paper, and wrapped around hardcover books, further elevating cover design to an art form in itself. Not commonly known is that the first cloth book to be gold-blocked was Lord Byron\u2019s Life and Works, published in 17 volumes, beginning in 1832.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking through the annals of book cover history, certain creations have stood out as exquisite gems, both in terms of their rarity and their staggering price tags. Among them, the “Bay Psalm Book” stands as one of the most expensive book cover sold at auction. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Book of Mormon holds the record as the most expensive antique book ever sold for a whopping 35 million dollars. Owing to this book’s religious significance to the Mormon Church it was indeed money worth spending on this hand-written copy of the religion\u2019s foundational text.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
