It\u2019s hard to imagine, but in earlier centuries, perfume was naturally infused into articles of clothing such as gloves and wigs. The reason perfume was used is because one of the most important toilette<\/a> regimes was the scent. Why? Because nobody washed. It was a widespread belief that hot water opened the pores and caused diseases therefore bathing was considered unhealthy. Moreover, soap was seen as unnecessary and clean water was expensive, scarce, and only the affluent could afford it. The elites, however, occasionally washed their faces and hands. Women however used perfumes less, especially single women as perfume was associated with \u2018fallen\u2019 women along with Anything too \u2018sexy\u2019 such as makeup. Men wore far more makeup, fancy clothes and bigger wigs than women of the day. Infact, these men were classed as \u2018macaroni men\u2019, a stereotypical phrase for men who wore slim fitted jackets, knee-length breeches, bright clothes, wigs and an ample amount of perfume. These men were exactly like the macaroni group, a group of young elite men in the 1700s who wanted everything foreign from the famous Egyptian<\/a> wigs to the famous Italian dish \u2018macaroni\u2019, hence their name. It is fascinating to think that there was a time when men were more pompous than women. Their faces were painted paler, waists smaller and hair taller.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Women who were privileged wore less flattery clothes and milder perfumes which were mostly used for events. The perfumes of these days were classed as \u2018toilet waters\u2019 which were single-note fragrances<\/a> with high alcohol content that lasted 3 to 4 hours and eau de cologne composed of two to four perfume oils. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
