Maybe the wish came true, maybe not, but in a world that becomes more difficult daily why not tap into the magic around us? Whatever your reason for making a wish, for trusting in magic and engaging with mystical lore, there is far more historical information as to why we do these practices, then you may realise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, do you know why we blow candles out on a birthday cake and at the same time make a wish?<\/p>\n\n\n

This tradition goes back to quite ancient times. It was the Greeks who started this tradition. For a birthday a round cake and a candle were presented to the birthday person. The rounded shape represented the moon and was to pay homage to Artemis, the moon goddess, with the candles representing the moon\u2019s reflected light. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The blowing out of the candles was believed to be that the smoke from the candles carried the wishes up heaven to the gods and goddesses. It also explains why the celebrant is expected to keep the wish silent. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So why do we throw coins into a fountain then? Here it has much more to do with theories rather than actual historical practice. Interestingly it is believed to be part of Celtic and Romano-British mythology. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It dates back to when the archaeological excavation in Northumberland in England unearthed Coventina\u2019s Well. Coventina was a Romano-British goddess of wells and springs, who was also associated with healing, abundance, renewal and childbirth. At the time of the find also excavated, were about 16,000 coins. <\/p>\n\n\n

Archaeologists could only presume that people threw coins into the well while making a wish to goddess Coventina. Wishing wells and fountains are still located worldwide, and the practice seems still alive and vibrant. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So what is the historical use of crystals? When did we start to utilise them in daily life? It’s not a new phenomenon, just like the others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Probably the first historical references to the use of crystals come from the Ancient Sumerian inhabitants of southern Mesopotamia (4th millennium BC), present-day Iraq, who included crystals in their magic formulas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Crystals were also used for healing in traditional Chinese Medicine, which dates back to at least 5000 years. The Egyptians used some stones for protection and health, whilst some for cosmetic purposes, grounded to create colourful make-up. The Ancient Greeks attributed several properties to crystals and many of the names we use today are of Greek origin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Did you know that the word ‘crystal’ comes from the Greek word for ice, as it was believed that clear quartz was water that had frozen so deeply that it would always remain solid? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The name of the Amethyst stone literally means ‘not drunken’ and was worn as an amulet to prevent both drunkenness and hangovers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hematite gets its name from blood, because of the red colouration produced when it oxidises. Ancient Greeks associated iron with Aries, the god of war. Greek soldiers would rub it over their bodies before battle, purportedly to make themselves invulnerable. <\/p>\n\n\n

Jade was recognised in China and South America as a kidney healing stone. More recently the Maoris of New Zealand wore jade pendants representing the ancestor spirits, passed down many generations through the male line. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many stones are also mentioned in many religious texts. The origin of the use of birthstones is from the breastplate of Aaron, or the “High Priest’s Breastplate”, from the book of Exodus. In the Koran, the 4th Heaven is composed of carbuncle (garnet). The Kalpa Tree, which represents an offering to the gods in Hinduism, is said to be made entirely of precious stone and a Buddhist text from the 7th century describes a diamond throne situated near the Tree of Knowledge<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the 11th century, in Europe,  a number of medical treatises appeared extolling the virtues of precious and semi-precious stones in the treatment of certain ailments. Typically stones were used alongside herbal remedies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1609 Anselmus de Boot, the court physician to Rudolf II of Germany, suggested that any virtue a gemstone has is due to the presence of good or bad angels. He named certain stones as helpful and put other’s qualities down simply to superstition.<\/p>\n\n\n
