On March 9, 1959, a lady named \u00a0Ruth Handler, birthed a fully grown doll. Yes, she already had given birth to real children and it was watching them play with ‘baby’ dolls and seeing them acting out more adult scenarios with them that drove her to create The Barbie Doll. Over a billion sold dolls later this iconic ‘plastic’ lady comes to London Design Museum for her first London exhibition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a 61-year-old barbie is looking good. Yes her figure has changed over the years moving with the fashions, but let’s be honest this plastic icon looks great.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And it’s fair to say she has had over the years the most magnificent wardrobe, full of designer outfits, that could make us green with envy. When she arrived on planet Earth even her first outfit turned heads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Known by collectors as \u2018Number 1 Barbie\u2019 she wore a black-and-white zebra-striped figure-hugging swimsuit and signature topknot\u00a0ponytail. Available as either a\u00a0blonde\u00a0or\u00a0brunette and sent out into the world as a “Teenage Fashion Model”. Mattel’s in-house fashion designer Charlotte Johnson initially created her first outfits and then Carol Spencer, who was Barbie’s fashion designer from 1963 to 1999.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But over the years she has had fashions made for her by a handful of the most important designers in the world. Barbie by Bob Mackie, Ralph Lauren, Bill Blass, Dior, Giorgio Armani, Givenchy, \u00a0and Barbie by Burberry to name but a few.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although we know her boyfriend is Ken we have no idea how many times she has been married but we do not know this style diva has worn wedding gowns designed by Vera Wang and Carolina Herrera, alongside Christian Louboutin designing a special pair of pink shoes for her. As for her choice of make-up? Mac of course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is just a tiny fraction of the world of this 11.5 inch lady. But worry not, a new exhibition at the Design Museum explores\u00a0Barbie\u2019s changing appearance exploring her evolving cultural shifts and her diverse representation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Highlights include some of the most recognisable and best-selling dolls, including the\u00a0\u2018surfer girl\u2019\u00a0Sunset Malibu Barbie\u00a0from\u00a01971\u00a0and which was one of the most popular of the decade, and the ground-breaking\u00a0<\/strong>Day to Night Barbie\u00a0from\u00a01985\u00a0that was designed to reflect the workplace revolution for women in the\u00a01980s.<\/p>\n\n\n

Visitors will be able to trace the changing silhouettes of mainstream fashion over the last\u00a065\u00a0years through the exhibition, and they will see the influence of designers from\u00a0Claire McCardell and Christian Dior, to Nolan Miller\u00a0via \u00a0Zac Posen.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, her work-attired pink suit transformed into a chic evening gown. There will also be two examples of\u00a01992\u2019s\u00a0Totally Hair Barbie, the best-selling\u00a0Barbie\u00a0of all time which has sold staggeringly\u00a0over 10 million.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are examples of the first\u00a0Black, Hispanic\u00a0and\u00a0Asian\u00a0dolls to bear the\u00a0Barbie\u00a0name on display, as well as dolls that reflect today\u2019s diverse, multicultural society. These include the first\u00a0Barbie\u00a0with Down’s syndrome, alongside the first to use a wheelchair, and the first to be designed with a \u2018curvy\u2019 body shape.<\/p>\n\n\n

Also open for exploration are exclusive, behind-the-scenes insights into\u00a0Mattel\u2019s design processes, and a detailed exploration of the\u00a0<\/strong>Barbie\u00a0<\/strong>doll as a technically and materially innovative creation.\u00a0\u00a0On display is a rare first edition\u00a0of Number 1 Barbie\u2019, the very first model released\u00a0in\u00a01959 amongst\u00a0250\u00a0other objects on show.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Special and rare dolls on show will include a unique prototype of the very first\u00a0Talking Barbie\u00a0(1968), which is one of several rare items borrowed directly from the\u00a0Mattel\u00a0headquarters archives in\u00a0Los Angeles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Special items on show include a custom miniature\u00a0Swarovski\u00a0crystal-embellished\u00a0British fashion designer Richard Quinn\u00a0attired doll displayed next to the original full-length gown from his\u00a0Autumn\/Winter 2021\u00a0show, and the\u00a0Samantha Cristoforetti Astronaut Barbie\u00a0that, being Barbie, travelled to space and flew on the\u00a0International Space Station.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Being a modern and popular lady many of \u00a0Barbie\u2019s friends are also on show, including her first friend,\u00a0<\/strong>Midge, <\/strong>and the much-loved\u00a0Christie\u00a0and\u00a0Teresa; as well as the younger sister of\u00a0Barbie, Skipper.\u00a0There\u2019ll also be a section dedicated to\u00a0her beau Ken, which shows six decades\u2019 worth of\u00a0Ken\u00a0dolls charting his evolution from 1961.<\/p>\n\n\n

And don’t forget it was not just fashion whose life Barbie touched at the exhibition see the influence of major designers and architects from\u00a0Florence Knoll\u00a0to\u00a0Frank Gehry\u00a0on the\u00a0Barbie\u00a0universe.<\/p>\n\n\n

Guests at the gala entered through the museum’s pink-bathed fountain and included Yasmine Finney,\u00a0Dame Zandra Rhodes,\u00a0Christopher Kane,\u00a0Stephen Jones OBE,\u00a0Mary Charteris & Robbie Furze, Sarah Mower MBE,\u00a0Zara Martin,\u00a0Dennis Okwera,\u00a0Amelia Windsor,\u00a0Astile Doherty, Bianca Bustamanti, Bishi, Connie Constance, Daisy de Villeneuve, Daniel Lismore, David Sassoon, Deborah Ababio, James Corbin, Lily Nova, Philip Sallon, Princess Julia, Sohee Park, Charley Dean Sayers,\u00a0Toni Ibekwe, David Sassoon, Faith Lynch,\u00a0and\u00a0Darkwah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Triples that were enjoyed\u00a0<\/strong>included Nyetimber English Sparkling Wine, Chemin de la Serre Viognier 2021 White Wine, Peroni Beers,\u00a0as well as\u00a0Raspberry & Pink Peppercorn\u00a0<\/strong>alcohol-free cocktails, whilst\u00a0listening to DJ\u00a0f\u00a0Zara Martin who spun a playlist that included\u00a0Barbie The Movie\u00a0soundtrack favourites\u00a0Charli XCX\u00a0‘Speed Drive’,\u00a0<\/em>Dua Lipa\u00a0‘Dance The Night’, and\u00a0<\/em>Sam Smith\u00a0‘Man I Am!\u2019\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The whole evening was set off with dazzling all-pink lighting and\u00a0a Barbie\u00a0closet, <\/strong>Barbie\u00a0box, bar and\u00a0DJ\u00a0booth made bespoke by\u00a0Fisher Productions. Seasonal floristry by\u00a0Lavender Green\u00a0in a modern pink palette topped off the immersive guest experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


The final section of the show spotlights the enduring role\u00a0Barbie\u00a0has as a pop culture icon, looking at her impact on design in all its forms, from fashion to film, as well as the\u00a0Barbie\u00a0brand\u2019s forays into social advocacy. This section also includes the original neon rollerblading costume actor\u00a0Margot Robbie\u00a0wore in the\u00a02023\u00a0movie,\u00a0Barbie, as well as other items that explore\u00a0Barbie\u2019s status as a cultural figurehead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This Barbie evening bought out all the elegant fashion and design crowd, after all, she may be well over 60 but she will always be a trendsetter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
