We played a showcase concert at the Menuhin School where Charles was a student at the time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-secondary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-8b8ad298d80d556c2de41824432c6d0b wp-block-paragraph\">Years later we met at Royal College of Music where we both studied with the&nbsp;late Irina Zaritskaya. Our friendship began then but we didn\u2019t play together until we were invited to perform Schostakovich\u2019s two piano suite at the Homecoming Festival in Moscow in 2002. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-secondary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-3771b6e5777bf148f05f333ef9890780 wp-block-paragraph\">We really clicked musically and this is how our <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/love-a-greener-bag-amber-valletta-and-her-lagerfeld-collaboration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">collaboration<\/a> started. Since then we have been performing together regularly and we founded the London Piano Festival together in 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-secondary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-070c41cd155b9840c8e917db5f1183cd wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What are the practical elements of performing a piano duet \u2013 e.g. who leads, crossing hands, etc.?<br \/><\/strong>CO: The key practical elements of playing four-hand piano duets consist mainly of synchronisation, intelligent balance of sound and the choreography of the hands\/arms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-secondary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-dcba5168074e3d946d2e5277e4c429ef wp-block-paragraph\">Breathing together is a great help in coordinating the sounds and phrases. When the hands come perilously close to each other, one played may need to adjust their wrist to allow the partner\u2019s hand extra space to fit in. Pedalling is usually the duty of the \u2018secondo\u2019 player, seated towards the lower end of the keyboard. This role assists with making the harmony clear and sustained when necessary.<br \/><br \/><strong>Tell us about the <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/collaboration-the-creative-core-of-artistry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">creative <\/a>process behind performing a piano duet work \u2013 do you spend a lot of time discussing how to coordinate your interpretation of the piece, or is it intuitive by this point?<br \/><\/strong>CO: During rehearsals, all of the above-mentioned elements need to be addressed. The interpretation can emerge organically but usually takes times after practising and discussing the many aspects of the music. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-secondary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-d067054f17c8b2aa203fb8471648fc9e wp-block-paragraph\">Slow, detailed work can also help the pianists dig deeper into the <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/the-art-of-session-musicians-in-film-scores-mastering-genres-from-horror-to-romance\/\">score<\/a>. The rewards of such practice quickly become apparent when the music is later played in the correct tempo!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-secondary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-0a6d73e0565b9223af9958b4b0fa50d8 wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><br \/>How important a role do you think friendship plays in piano duet performance?<br \/><\/strong>KA:&nbsp;Friendship is very important in a&nbsp;piano duet, we have to think and feel as one . Often two pianos or four hands pieces have very rich or polyphonic textures and we have to think of our parts blended together rather than just only think of our own part. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-secondary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-76cc3c616ffcdc6853cff424c1865556 wp-block-paragraph\">A piano duo can\u2019t exist without mutual respect, you have to be open for feedback and even some criticism.
