Yup, it is one of those shocking figures we read but don’t often believe or truly let sink in, and probably think ohh I’m fine… Approximately 80% of women wear the wrong bra size, so that may well include you. That’s a shockingly high number, but why may it be? There are several reasons for wearing the wrong size, including a lack of fitting expertise, bras that have become loose over the years due to over-wear and stretching or changes in breast size. This can lead to discomfort, and pain, and even affect posture and skin health. Ask many women and they will tell you that bras are basically uncomfortable and here sits the major issue. Many women only go for a bra fitting once in their lives or sometimes they are just playing a guessing game. Your bra might feel comfortable, or you may be in pain by mid-afternoon. How many women when they get home the first thing they do is rip off what feels like a piece of torture; their bra…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interestingly the first modern bra as we know it, was patented <\/a>in\u00a01914\u00a0by Mary Phelps Jacob, it essentially was two handkerchiefs and a bit of ribbon. Not very useful in this day and age when clothes are thankfully not corsetted. Although it has evolved significantly throughout the 20th century, with innovations like padded cups, adjustable straps, and hook-and-eye closures it is still an uncomfortable piece of often necessary structure<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But what are the telltale signs that it is the wrong size? If it doesn’t exactly fit the contours of your body, then before anything else it will feel uncomfortable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If for another example, the band is rising up your back it means you’re wearing a size too big; if you have spillage over the cup it means the cup is too small. If the straps are falling down, you might need a bra with adjustable straps. Extremely important with a good fit, is the centre panel between the cups known as the gore, is flat against your breastbone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you have a gap in your cup it’s easy to mistake this as being a size too big, but in some instances, you could just be wearing the wrong cup shape, different shapes of cups give different effects and support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And one that is often an issue and can be apparent from the clothes worn on top of the underwear. If a cup is too small then the bra’s wire sits on the breast tissue which may cause discomfort and not support you properly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For many women, the thought of getting a bra fitted is not just embarrassing but can be expensive, as well as, sadly, many shops do not measure the proper way. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The true way to measure a bust is to measure UNDER the bust to check the initial back size as this is where the majority of support comes from. Only then do you go on to judge<\/a> the cup size. It’s often best to try several to see what cup size and shape works best.<\/p>\n\n\n

For women who have had breast surgery or for women who have had anything in the way of surgery or surgery of scars anywhere the bra sits getting the right support can be even more difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are, of course, options for bras that work without straps, wires or seems but these are more like tops or sports bras; do these really give the proper support and also shape the bosom to the maximum?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They clean well in washing machines; wash cold with like colours. Use only non-chlorine bleach. Lay flat to dry. Remove pads and wash them separately.\u00a0Re-insert pads<\/a>. No need to hand wash the special products to prolong their life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And as shape matters so much there are different styles, allowing for shapes and ability needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
