Real Vanilla is extremely special and rather expensive. Did you know that up until the mid-19th\u00a0century, Vanilla began with\u00a0a single flower that opened for pollination<\/a> only one day every year, and if you missed it, then, no vanilla bean. After that, it was found that the rare flowers could be hand-pollinated, opening the doors for a little more Vanilla production. A vine itself may be rather prolific, with about a thousand blossoms per vine, but only 40 to 50 blossoms are pollinated. These delicate blooms must be hand-pollinated during a five to six-hour window. Once pollinated, beans take about three to four months to mature.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The whole process is labour-intensive because of the delicacy of the plant, and harvesting only occurs during June and July. Now that gives some reasons as to why the ingredient is so exclusive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
