Drive up or down the A43 to Silverstone, a village in West Northamptonshire, whose name probably meant ‘farm\/settlement of Saewulf\/Sigewulf’ a long time ago. Now, of course, arriving is probably more likely to mean a visit to the Silverstone Racing Circuit, the current home of the British Grand Prix. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Silverstone was first used for motorsport by an ‘ad hoc’ group of friends who set up an impromptu race in September 1947. One of their members lived in nearby Silverstone village and was aware that there was a deserted airfield. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over its rich history, the site has played host to the most important racing drivers, including Jackie Stewart, who won at Silverstone. In 1977  James Hunt won at a speed of 130.36 mph. 1983 Frenchman Alain Prost won the race in the Renault RE40 at an average speed of 139.218 mph. In 1987, Nigel  Mansell won; in 1988, Ayrton Senna (universally recognised as the best driver in the sport) won. Other great names of winners in the industry that raced at Silverstone also include David Coulthard, Damon Hill, Michael Schumacher, Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel, to name but a few. And that is just the racing car drivers, as Silverstone also hosts the World Superbike event.<\/p>\n\n\n
