There\u2019s the version of ourselves we present to the world, polished, curated, composed and then there\u2019s the one behind closed doors. Perhaps it\u2019s not deception but survival, or simply the nature of being human. To wear different faces for different moments, to shift with the setting. As friends, lovers, workers, siblings, and artists, we play roles. But these roles don\u2019t necessarily dilute who we are. Sometimes, they reveal us more fully. The studio becomes a sanctuary; the performance, a window. The self is both subject and material. And so the personal becomes public and the public, strangely intimate. What we see in the gallery or on stage is often only a surface, beneath it, an interior world flickers just out of view. Yet sometimes, we are invited in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-secondary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-e67b5f70a87ea2623e1b5d07db02feca wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>Beaton as Maker and Muse<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-secondary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-d52c4165f70527ddcb4f958333ad8521 wp-block-paragraph\">Few figures embodied this interplay quite like Sir Cecil Beaton. Born in 1904, Beaton was one of Britain\u2019s most celebrated aesthetes: a fashion photographer for Vogue, court photographer to the Royal Family, an Oscar-winning set and costume designer, a diarist, and a gardener. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/500px-The_Prime_Minister_of_Manipur_in_1944.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"622\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/500px-The_Prime_Minister_of_Manipur_in_1944.jpg?resize=500%2C622&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-176170\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/500px-The_Prime_Minister_of_Manipur_in_1944.jpg?w=500&amp;ssl=1 500w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/500px-The_Prime_Minister_of_Manipur_in_1944.jpg?resize=241%2C300&amp;ssl=1 241w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right has-secondary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-007618ea742f43979acab23baeb51995 wp-block-paragraph\">Prime Minister of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Manipur\">Manipur<\/a>\u00a0(1944) as his outfit is prepared before the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Coronation\">coronation<\/a>\u00a0of the new Maharaja\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bodhchandra_Singh\">Bodhchandra Singh<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-secondary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-e8a1bc0806adbc40f13592ff4ee5dc99 wp-block-paragraph\">His life was adorned with glamour and elegance, but also marked by an unshakable desire to build beautiful worlds; ones that could be both lived in and looked at. For Beaton, the personal was always part theatre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-secondary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-3859f7e028c8009513c780f63083f502 wp-block-paragraph\">A camera in hand, he shaped visual culture as few others have. His portraits of royalty reframed monarchy with modernity; his fashion photography sculpted fantasy from fabric and pose. His costume designs for&nbsp;&#8216;My Fair Lady&#8217;&nbsp;and collaborations with Frederick Ashton added layers of floral whimsy and baroque romance to the stage. He was, in every role, a designer of realities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-secondary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-1a42252a4216afa69948a135aa5257ad wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>A Life in Bloom<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-secondary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-0bf15bd15f2070992bc00c18ad090b1c wp-block-paragraph\">Now, in 2025, two exhibitions invite us to encounter Beaton from two angles; the public and the private. One, a vivid celebration of his horticultural imagination. The other, an intimate look into his familial roots. Seen side by side, they don\u2019t contradict, but rather expand, offering an unusually complete portrait of a man who made a career out of curation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-secondary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-e25bfdbcde0ccae277b4920d095dc9cd wp-block-paragraph\">At the Garden Museum in London,&nbsp;Cecil Beaton\u2019s Garden Party&nbsp;(14 May \u2013 21 September) examines the essential role that gardens and flowers played in Beaton\u2019s creative world. It\u2019s the first exhibition to focus exclusively on the floral thread running through his photography, costume design, painting, and social life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-secondary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-c54d206a4931ba677e243bc71d1063bb wp-block-paragraph\">This is Beaton in full bloom. From his early floral arrangements at Cambridge to the lavish garden parties at Ashcombe House, the exhibition shows how flowers were more than decoration. They were inspiration, stagecraft, and symbol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-secondary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-35f4bb79dfdbde86065c1c2b523668b5 wp-block-paragraph\">Original sketches, Royal portraits, costume illustrations, and photographs of friends like Bianca Jagger among the flower beds bring this vision to life. There\u2019s the Surrealist rose coat he wore to his 1937 F\u00eate Champ\u00eatre. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-secondary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-1dcd49268ba42bec56224b8ad95a716a wp-block-paragraph\">There are the fresh blossoms used in fashion shoots for Vogue. And there is Beaton the gardener, quietly cultivating colour, shape, and drama in Wiltshire soil. The show is designed by artist Luke Edward Hall, whose eye for romantic eccentricity makes him a fitting collaborator across decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-secondary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-d323a36141939c677e70ea25b111865a wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Behind the Lens, Inside the Family<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-secondary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-c903dbb7800868074aeeec9330acebb2 wp-block-paragraph\">But while the Garden Museum exhibition offers spectacle,&nbsp;Cecil Beaton: A Family Archive&nbsp;(opening 28 April) brings us closer. Set within the Gladstones&#8217; Hawarden Estate in North Wales, where Beaton was a frequent visitor and uncle to Charlie Gladstone. The show reveals a more domestic Beaton. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-secondary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-f70ea0735641b807e453ad509211db42 wp-block-paragraph\">A man not in front of the camera, but surrounded by family. It is here, among personal scrapbooks, handwritten notes, and private photographs. The result is more tactile than reverent, more affectionate than grand. Visitors are encouraged not to gaze from a distance, but to touch, to flick through, to connect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-secondary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-957d40a14b2c1c40b2df654fe36286d0 wp-block-paragraph\">This sense of closeness extends into the estate itself. Artist Sam Wood, garden designer Sean Pritchard, and muralist Melissa Wickham have created installations across the grounds. Each one echoing Beaton\u2019s flair and sentiment. The landscape becomes part of the archive. And suddenly, the private and public selves of Cecil Beaton feel less divided. Instead, they ripple into one another like sunlight through garden leaves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-secondary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-0e6b79f5c1157b017cd05af8522a9717 wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Beyond the Image<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-secondary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-47b2c544ea24bf2648ae18871de5b74a wp-block-paragraph\">Together, these exhibitions ask us not just to look, but to really see; to step beyond the frame and into the life behind it. They remind us that identity is layered, shifting, and contradictory. That glamour and intimacy are not opposites. And that beauty can be both performance and presence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-secondary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-982df82d961aab46bebf8f6f3432e6b0 wp-block-paragraph\">In seeing Beaton from both angles, we might also see ourselves, as people made up of roles and rituals, of outward performance and inner truth. Perhaps, like Beaton, we are all curators of our own lives, constantly arranging, revealing, concealing.
