Frankenstein, a Novel by Mary Shelley<\/strong>, published in<\/strong> 1818<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

At nineteen years old, Mary Shelley dreamt a contemporary myth into existence: Frankenstein, a tale of ambition, creation, and consequence reflecting the dangers of scientific findings of that era. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fictional character was created by Victor, a young scientist, who assembled body parts, creating a horrified creature, which he later abandoned. The creature, grappling in isolation, learnt how to speak and read, and soon after sort for revenge on his creator, leading to tragic events. The novel has been adapted into Frankenstein movies over the years.<\/p>\n\n\n

Other Mary Shelly books include The Last Man, Valperga, while editing and fostering the work of her husband, Percy Bysshe Shelley. Her spark broadened further, extending to her only son, Percy Florence Shelley, who became a writer too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit, a novel by<\/strong> Jeanette Winterson<\/strong>, published in 1985<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jeanette Winterson\u2019s first novel earned her a Whitbread First Novel Award and announced an original, playful, and unafraid voice to the literary scene.. The semi-autobiography captures a young lesbian girl growing up in a strict Pentecostal home and groomed to be a missionary. However, the plot twist happened when her adoptive parents found out, and so she began questioning her faith and sexuality, leading to her excommunication from the church and her family.<\/p>\n\n\n

Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit, Jeanette Winterson, Vintage Classic <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Again, this writer wrote a cross-temporal novel, Sexing the Cherry, then came Written on the Body, which explores the complexities of love and desire, and later, a modern narrative of Mary Shelley\u2019s classic, Frankenstein, that she called Frankissstein. Jeanette Winterson’s books gave her recognition, including an Order of the British Empire award, OBE (2006), and later a Commander of the British Empire award, CBE (2018). Meanwhile, Jeanette Winterson practised as a broadcaster and is currently a professor of New Writing at the University of Manchester as part <\/em>of her public literary life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apples, Book By Richard Milward 2007<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

English novelist Richard Milward\u2019s Apples came alive when he was twenty-two, a tragicomic, vivid, rhythmic painting of adolescence written in experimental style while still a university student. The book narrates the story of a girl, Eve, who tries to distract herself from her mother’s cancer and spiteful classmates by getting involved in a life of sex and drugs, not noticing the young, obsessive Adam struggling with sexual frustration and an abusive dad. Doubling down on formal verve, Ten Storey Love Song was erected in a predatory block of concrete prose. Decades later, he returned with Man-Eating Typewriter, shortlisted for the Goldsmiths Prize (2023), told in stud Polari. The Return of the Soldier, a Novel by Rebecca West, 1918<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

British author Rebecca West started as a critic and suffragist, then published The Return of the Soldier in her twenties.<\/em> In her book, Rebecca shares a story of a soldier, Chris, who returns from World War I with amnesia, having only the memory of his pre-war romance with Margret, forgetting Kitty, his wife, and the past fifteen years of his life.<\/p>\n\n\n

Her brightness shines across genres through the lens of her next books: Black Lamb and Grey Falcon, an epic study of the history of the Balkans, and A Train of Powder, a collection of detailed courtroom proceedings on the different Nuremberg trials. <\/em>These earned her the title of Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (1959). A career that sparked in literature was refracted into many colour shades of fiction and journalism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Author Katy Darby<\/strong> The Whore’s Asylum <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Award-winning author Katy Darby made her literary debut with The Whore’s Asylum, later retitled The Unpierced Heart, a Victoria era novel set in the 19th Century Oxford. The story reveals a young medical doctor who volunteers at a shelter for ‘fallen women’ driven by a desire to reform and revive the lives of those cast aside by society. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But as he gets entangled in the lives of the women he seeks to save, dark secrets surface. His closest friend, acquainted with the dangers of misplaced affection, watches helplessly as love and obsession turn into betrayal and violence. The noble mission soon became a tale of emotional ruin and unforeseen tragedy. A book perfect for fans of historical fiction, gothic suspense and psychological drama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Caleb Azumah Nelson\u2019s award winning book Open Water, composed with musical poise and gentle exactness, won the Costa First Novel Award and more.<\/p>\n\n\n

The book Open Water narrates a story of two Black British artists, a photographer and a dancer who met at a pub in South East London and found out they have a comforting similarity in their lives. As their friendship grew and transformed into an intense, intimate relationship, they discover they have to struggle to find love and safety in a society that see them for their skin colour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Set against the backdrop of contemporary London, the novel explores themes like Black Identity, masculinity, love and racial injustice. The protagonist’s world is framed by the trauma of being seen as a ‘Black body’ as he experiences racism and police violence. British-Ghanaian Writer and Photographer Caleb Azumah Nelson went on to write other books like Small Worlds, which brightened his map, giving him the Dylan Thomas Prize in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stolen, Novel by Lucy Christopher<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

British author Lucy Christopher broke into the literary scene with her debut novel, Stolen, a gripping psychological thriller narrated through a letter from a teenage captive to her captor. Written in the scorching Australian outback, the novel Stolen plunge readers in the emotional and physical strain of abduction, survival and complex human connection. Stolen got the Branford Boase Award and Australia’s Gold Inky Award in 2010.<\/p>\n\n\n
