The French term Haute Couture, quite simply translates to high-sewing, and is the creation of exclusive, custom-made, exquisitely designed fashion, made with the most luxurious fabrics, exceptional craft and the most innovative designs. Steeped in history, this term has new reference points in 2025, referring not just to fashion but a handful of exceptional pieces of art, jewellery, furniture, food, in fact, anything that is created to a level of excellence can be considered. Life moves forward, ideas change, meld into new times, new thinking, but this really can only come when a level of perfection is achieved, allowing for vital contemporary progression. Newness of any great standing, with a fearless approach, cannot come about without skill, heritage and attainment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because, without history, there is no context; without learning the depth of the craft, there is no given right to move things forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Begin by learning to draw and paint like the old masters. After that, you can do as you like; everyone will respect you.” <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don’t move things forward, in other words, unless you have studied the craft, the masters, and the history. Greatness is the amalgamation of rare talent and extensive knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n

The history and knowledge of Haute Couture goes further back than most realise. Who knew that during the 16th to the 18th century, it was only the upper portions of a dress that were remodelled to distinguish it, to make it ‘new’.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But by the beginning of the mid-nineteenth century, Paris had become the centre of a growing industry that focused on making outfits from high-quality, expensive, often unusual fabric and sewn with extreme attention to detail and finished by the most experienced and capable of craftspeople using time-consuming, hand-executed techniques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although France is considered the home of Fashion, it was a British man who is thought to have coined the term ‘designer’ and brought about what we consider the art of fashion to be what it is today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Charles Frederick Worth is widely considered the father of Haute Couture as it is known today. Born in  Lincolnshire, in the UK, Worth made his mark by revolutionising how clothing-making had been previously perceived. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Worth took the concept of what had previously been a ‘dressmaker’, one who was the artist of garnishment, into a fashion designer, creating one-of-a-kind designs, preparing a portfolio of designs that were shown on live models at the House of Worth. It may also be hearsay, but he is also supposedly credited with being the first designer to sew his name into his clothes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interestingly, it was the UK that was the first to create the ideals of Haute Couture, but let’s be honest, the Island has always been and will always be a home not just to genius tradition but forward-thinking, ground-breaking ideas. It is the home where creativity meets heritage, with the world\u2019s most historic luxury brands.<\/p>\n\n\n

It’s quite incredible to think that from this small island, some of the most luxurious, desirable, premium and elegant items in the world are made in the UK. Think cars, it’s got to be Rolls-Royce, luxury food, Fortnum and Mason (they did invent the Scotch egg after all). Jewellery? Garrards 1735, who can claim to be the oldest jeweller in the world with British Royalty as customers. Porcelain? That would be Wedgwood. With fashion, the list is too long, but the best knitwear we all know is cashmere, with its home being Scotland, where several of the highest echelons of makers reside. This small, mainly coastal land is a producer of a number of luxury items.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another of the most prized products of Scotland is its whisky. Take Johnnie Walker as a perfect example.  This Scotch whisky was established in the Scottish burgh of Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire, in 1820, and continued to be produced and bottled at the town’s Hill Street plant, once the world’s largest bottling plant until only a few years ago. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Started by John Walker, it is a true legacy brand with son Alexander ‘Alec’ Walker and grandson Alexander Walker II, both largely responsible for establishing the whisky’s name of excellence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under its umbrella, the house has Red Label, a popular blend based on the original Special Old Highland blends.  It’s Black Label, a classic blend, also derived from the original Special Old Highland blends. The Double Black is a smokier and richer version of the Black Label. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Gold Label Reserve is, smooth and sweet blend.  The Green Label, a 15-Year-Old blend and the 18 Year Old, an 18 Year-old expression, and finally the Blue Label, a rich and complex blend made with lighter malts. <\/p>\n\n\n

The Blue label is the Haute Couture of the collection, known for its exceptional quality and rarity, with only one in every 10,000 casks ever going on sale. Blue Label remains the flagship and most sought-after whisky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is made from hand-selecting rare Scotch Whiskies, with only a tiny fraction of available casks meeting the stringent standards required for the blend. The blend is known for its complex, velvety smooth, and rich flavour profile, with a depth that reflects its high quality. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Not unlike a great fashion house, every bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue Label is the result of the combined expertise of a small team of passionate whisky makers led by Dr Emma Walker, just the sixth master blender in a lineage that stretches back almost 200 years to the time of founder, John Walker. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

This coming season, the house has collaborated with another company with the same stature, grandeur and finesse to craft a stand-alone bottle to house the nectar. The new limited edition design is for the Indian festive season, created in partnership with celebrated fashion designer Rahul Mishra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The revered Indian fashion designer, based in Delhi, was the first Indian designer to be invited to showcase at the Haute Couture Week in Paris. He won the International Woolmark Prize in 2014 at Milan Fashion Week, becoming the first Indian designer to win the award. Renowned for his exquisite embroidery and mastery of colour, as well as his commitment to slow fashion, \u2018mindful luxury\u2019 and is known for his passion for supporting local artisans.<\/p>\n\n\n

Bringing this design philosophy to the partnership where joint values meet in understanding and respect. Alongside heritage, craft and timeless elegance. Mishra\u2019s bottle and pack design pays tribute to the rich cultural tapestry of India, honouring rituals, celebrating connections, and walking boldly into a season of festivity.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The limited edition design will feature as the showpiece of a series of international Johnnie Walker Blue Label festive celebrations with Indian talent and partners across October and November.   In many ways, the collaboration of this UK house and an Indian couturier is not as surprising as may initially be thought, as India remains the largest market for Scotch whisky in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rich, vibrant colours presented on the bottle in many ways reflect the tasting note of the exilir enclosed within the blue glass. Rich, smooth and luxurious, with brightness of fresh citrus and soft florals of Rose petals, that give way to plush dark Chocolate, creamy Vanilla and nutty Hazelnut all medled into a warming smoke. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The limited-edition designs are also a symbol of what he refers to as  \u2018bright beginnings\u2019, the images of native flora and fauna, which he describes as \u201cblooming flowers and spirited animals\u201d. The intricate bottle design also features a bright festive night symbolising abundance and joy to come. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As carefully handled as every hand-sewn bugle bead, every textured layer, each extension of the silhouette, every placement print, and each crafted corset created by Rahul, the shared values of the two houses, he says<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cJohnnie Walker Blue Label has been a symbol of luxury and celebration for decades – not only in India but across the world – and learning more about the time and craftsmanship<\/strong><\/em> that goes into every bottle has been a wonderful journey.
