This October, Somerset House in London presents Infinite Bodies, a landmark exhibition by internationally acclaimed choreographer and director Sir Wayne McGregor CBE<\/a><\/strong>. Marking the culmination of Somerset House\u2019s 25th birthday celebrations, it brings together a dynamic constellation of collaborators across dance, visual arts and sound, exploring bold new expressions of our bodies across space, time, and technology. Sir Wayne McGregor, choreographer and director<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sir Wayne McGregor is a multi-award-winning British choreographer and director, internationally renowned for trailblazing innovations in performance that have radically redefined dance in the modern era. Driven by an insatiable curiosity about movement and its creative potentials, his experiments have led him into collaborative dialogue with an array of artistic forms, scientific disciplines, and technological<\/strong> <\/a>interventions. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The works to be shown at Somerset House are multi-sensory installations, performances and experiments which will take over the spaces Embankment Galleries, including spectacular new commissions. A collection of emotional moments to be explored via dance, it’s all its tremendous facets.<\/p>\n\n\n

Company Wayne McGregor <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

McGregor\u2019s world-class company of dancers will be in residence at Somerset House, periodically activating the installations and facilitating interactions.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As ever with this polymath, this landmark exhibition explores how his investigations into the body, movement and cutting-edge digital technologies have radically redefined our perception of physical intelligence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Extending the experience beyond Somerset House, a major off-site installation will also be presented at Stone Nest in London\u2019s West End, forming part of a city-wide celebration of Infinite Bodies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The works will span the dynamic spectrum of McGregor\u2019s three-decade career and the cross-disciplinary collaborations he is renowned for, including OMNI, a striking new work created with Industrial Light & Magic that blends choreography with high-impact visual effects.  <\/p>\n\n\n

Reflecting the collaborative nature that defines Studio Wayne McGregor\u2019s creative home in East London, the exhibition features collaborations with world-leading artists, designers, musicians, and technologists, such as Industrial Light & Magic, artist group Random International, Oscar-winning sound designer Nicolas Becker, renowned music producer LEXX, and artists Ravi Deepres, Ben Cullen Williams, Jeffrey Shaw, OpenEndedGroup and Nick Rothwell. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

McGregor also continues his creative exchanges with visionary collaborators such as fashion designer Gareth Pugh<\/a><\/strong>, visual artist Theresa Baumgartner, photographer Indigo Lewin, and filmmaker Ruth Hogben.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At select moments during the run, Company Wayne McGregor will bring the artworks to life, offering audiences a rare glimpse into their creative process. There are also special appearances that will take place on unannounced dates with Wayne McGregor: Infinite Bodies and fully accessible events. These include those with physical disabilities, as well as neurodivergent and visually impaired to join special workshops and events enabling audiences to engage with and enjoy Wayne McGregor actively. This is part of Sommerset House’s commitment to inclusive access.<\/p>\n\n\n

No One Is An Island (2021) by Random International,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exhibition will also feature long-time partners Random International<\/a><\/strong>, including the responsive light installations Future Self and No One is an Island, which explore the evolving relationship between humans and machines, bringing dancers into live interaction with kinetic light sculptures that mimic biological movement in the most minimalist manner. Ben Cullen Williams\u2019 sculptural collaboration <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Body for AI <\/em>embodies the evolving dialogue between technology and the human body; a bold reflection on identity, the real and the artificial, time and space, dance and landscape. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deepstaria Void, conjures a highly sensory, meditative acoustic space, filled with a composition designed by Invisible Mountain. They have created an acoustic image that is continuously recomposed and performed by their bespoke digital audio engine, Bronze AI. <\/em>Presented in an environment with limited lighting, the installation focuses the senses and heightens the audience\u2019s perception of sound, space and presence, redefining the boundaries between live and digital experiences.\u202f <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Further highlights within <\/em>Infinite Bodies include McGregor\u2019s The Living Archive, a continually evolving digital platform that captures over three decades of choreographic exploration. Featuring motion capture, interactive AI experiments, rehearsal footage, and archival material, audiences are invited to step into the creative process and examine the body’s relationship to movement, memory, and data. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the heart of The Living Archive is AISOMA, an artificially intelligent choreographic tool trained on McGregor\u2019s own archive and a collaboration with Google Arts & Culture Lab. AISOMA generates original movement material, creating a live dialogue between the dancer and McGregor\u2019s body of work. <\/p>\n\n\n

Originally designed as a tool for McGregor and Company to use in studio, the interactive application will be updated for <\/em>Infinite Bodies, enabling visitors to have their own choreographic conversations with AISOMA. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Infinite Bodies also showcases McGregor\u2019s high-profile collaborations across film, fashion, music, and dance, including fashion designer Gareth Pugh, artist Shirazeh Houshiary and music icons Radiohead and The Chemical Brothers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indigo Lewin, a leading contemporary photographer, will present her work in the Great Arch Hall. Invited by McGregor to be Artist in Residence for the Venice Biennale Danza since 2021, Lewin has documented dancers in rehearsal and at rest, in intimate, visceral and thrilling expressions of the body. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sir<\/strong> Wayne McGregor: On The Other Earth <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Presented offsite, in partnership with Stone Nest in London\u2019s West End, McGregor unveils On The Other Earth<\/a><\/strong>, a radical new installation to extend the experience of Infinite Bodies beyond Somerset House. As the world\u2019s first post-cinematic choreographic installation, it refracts, evolves and reimagines dance performance in a startlingly original new form of experience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Set within Jeffrey Shaw and Sarah Kenderdine\u2019s radically immersive, panoramic, 360-degree stereoscopic, 12k LED, 26-million-pixel nVis screen, where 3D imagery is experienced within an enveloping, large-scale cylindrical architecture of eight metres wide and four metres tall. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Created in collaboration with artists Ravi Deepres and Theresa Baumgartner, and combining dance, choreography, digital imaging, spatialised sound, and AI, McGregor once again redefines how we think about movement, the body, and performance. <\/p>\n\n\n

In On The Other Earth, visitors are invited into the heart of the dance, connecting in close contact with the hyperreal dancers of Company Wayne McGregor and the Hong Kong Ballet<\/a><\/strong> in a physicalised sound environment designed by In rible Mountain, the collective <\/strong>comprised of Oscar-winning sound designer Nicolas Becker and renowned music producer LEXX . <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In groups of just 20, audiences are surrounded by shifting visual and sonic landscapes, where a series of thought-provoking otherworldly scenes and moments of intimate interplay unfold in every direction, expanding perceptions of performance and the future of entertainment.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Infinite Bodies is curated by Dr Cliff Lauson, Director of Exhibitions at Somerset House, and writer Philippa Dunn.\u202f <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the Other Earth<\/strong> has been co-produced between Hong Kong Baptist University and Studio Wayne McGregor, and co-commissioned by La Biennale di Venezia, Danza; Somerset House, London; Tai Kwun \u2013 Centre for Heritage and Arts, Hong Kong.
