When we love fragrance, when we enjoy the process of spraying, breathing in deeply and surrounding ourselves in the mists of fragranced mystery, do we really think much about how the end product arrived in its glassed vessel? Probably not. This may be in part because perfumes have been with us from ancient times, yet the process of making scent has actually changed many times over centuries, and past crafts, forgotten in the sands of time, don’t occur to us. There is an array of ways to make a scent, yet sometimes going back to go forward makes for an exemplary elixir. The History of Acqua di Parma <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

His most famous scent, and his first Colonia<\/strong><\/a>, was inspired by Italian sunshine and the abundance of citrus fruits around him. Still a legendary fragrance, it became particularly known as the glitterati of Hollywood in the 1950s fell in love with this potion.<\/p>\n\n\n

Italian<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once upon a time, a baron named Carlo Magnani from Parma in Italy <\/a><\/strong>created a perfume house in 1916. His wish was to fashion an alternative to heady and heavy French fragrance, which was the fashion on the day. Thus, the beautiful house of Acqua di Parma was born.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enfleurage<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the time of the creation, the ways of obtaining floral notes for perfumes would have been via enfleurage<\/a><\/strong>. A strange-sounding process of collecting the scent mainly from petals.<\/p>\n\n\n

Extracting Perfume from Flowers<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Traditionally, glass plates in a wooden frame, called a \u2018chassis\u2019 were generously coated in fat. Florals such as Jasmine and Tuberose were carefully placed on the fat, added daily until the scent was strong enough: A captivation method, that stored the scent, if you like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A roughly 90-day process, this ‘fat pomade’ would have been washed with alcohol to render the perfume \u2018extrait\u2019, and then further processed to reveal the most heavenly, true-to-life \u2018absolute\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perfume Price<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A long and expensive process, this method of scent extraction using fats and oils was practised in ancient civilisations like Egypt and the Near East. The technique, however, became widely known after it was adopted in the 16th-century<\/a><\/strong> perfume hub of Grasse, in France.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New Perfume Extraction Methods<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since that time, at least six main methods for extracting perfume oils from ingredients have been developed: steam distillation, solvent extraction, expression, enfleurage, maceration, and supercritical fluid extraction, like CO2 extraction, and new ones are being developed all the time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But sometimes the old ways are the best, and though a time-consuming process that gently captures the purest olfactive essence of jasmine, Acqua di Parma utilised this method to create their latest juice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gelsomino A Freddo Eau de Parfum<\/strong> a new scent 2025<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The name of this new edition to the Signatures of the Sun<\/a><\/strong> collection simply translates as Cold Jasmine, as if the name reflects the simple purity of how the essential oils were obtained, and the extreme purity and complex completeness of the natural oil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jasmine made by modern methods can be sweet, rich, and floral, often with complex, musky, or even fruity undertones that can be intoxicating and sensual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jasmine extracted by enfleurage smells sweet, rich, and floral, with complex notes of honey, fruit, and a hint of greenness, balanced by a deep, musky, and slightly powdery base. And so this traditional method captures a more natural and potent essence compared to modern techniques. Hence, the reason for its use in this new perfume.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So how does this new fragrance smell? wear? and hold itself on skin<\/a><\/strong>? In many ways, more than just process, it echoes so much of the house’s history and codes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Floral Woody<\/strong> Perfume.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It opens with brightness of Italian Lemon Essence, soft spice of Pink Pepper Essence, and a herbaceous, camphorous modern facet via Artemisia Essence. This brings a luminosity to the opening, making for a shiny, lively top, filled with a sunshine DNA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its heart is an ode to the regal flower in perfumery: Jasmine. Via this almost mystical Enfleurage Essence, this majestic flower in all its full glory here meets with rich, earthy, and slightly smoky elements of leathery, spicy from Black Tea Essence, and the Orris brings its soft powdery joy with a creamy, smooth, and buttery aroma, ensuring the heart is a tamed richness and floral celebration. Each note sitting with the Jasmine Essence brings alive all its multitude of layers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It finally comes to rest with Gaiacwood, Cypriol, and Patchouli essence that anchor the elixir. Deep, woody, and earthy aromas of smoky and spicy, nuanced via Cypriol, echo earlier notes whilst Patchouli bring woody earthy depth and a smoky<\/a><\/strong>, woody, and balsamic scent with underlying notes of sweetness and spice coming from the sacred Gaiacwood. This rounds off the perfume and allows for notes to echo back and forth, and finally ties up this floral and wood essence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Nose, Daphn\u00e9 Bugey<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The perfumer behind the new scent is Daphn\u00e9 Bugey. Born in Grenoble, France, she fell in love with perfumery on a family trip to Grasse when she was 12 years old, and resolved to make it her calling. She has worked across many perfumes in her career and speaks of this new scent as a challenge<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCreating this fragrance presented a double challenge: the first was balancing the contrasting elements while elevating the jasmine enfleurage extraction. Creating a genderless jasmine fragrance was the second challenge: finding the middle ground between the floral and woody elements of the composition.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
