 Matt Eley<\/strong> Artist<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eley, a British artist and typographer based in South West London, has spent the better part of three decades living in the land of kerning, colour palettes, and client deadlines. The kind of creative who could make Helvetica look heroic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But after 30 years of corporate campaigns that \u201ccame and went in a matter of weeks,\u201d as he puts it, something shifted. He wanted to create work that lasted, something that wouldn\u2019t be left on a hard drive or deleted in the next rebrand cycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, he swapped pixels for paint and started making words human again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eley\u2019s art doesn\u2019t whisper polite typographic theory; it bellows emotional truth. His bold, hand-painted text pieces, spanning his two collections Love Lettered and Echoes of Urban Decay, make you feel before you even start reading. The words themselves are simple: fragments, declarations, regrets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPRETTY MUCH PERFECT.\u201d \u201cSTOP TELLING ME THE TRUTH.\u201d \u201cEVEN IF IT KILLS ME.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

They hang somewhere between poetry and confession, like overheard thoughts frozen in paint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think a single campaign I ever designed would\u2019ve been saved from a house fire,\u201d he says, half-joking. \u201cBut maybe one of these paintings would.\u201d It\u2019s the kind of sentiment that sums up his practice, an artist trying to outlive the fleetingness of his own profession.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s something delightfully paradoxical about it all. Typography, the world\u2019s most controlled design language, suddenly dripping with human imperfection. In Love Lettered, Eley pares everything down to ink on paper, exploring the intimacy of handwriting without the hand-wringing sentimentality. Echoes of Urban Decay, meanwhile, sees words emerging from the grit of acrylic and canvas, text weathered by time, like graffiti that\u2019s decided to grow up but still wants to be seen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And it\u2019s not just about the words themselves. It\u2019s about what they carry: memory, emotion, the ache of presence. Eley\u2019s paintings remind us that while buildings crumble and trends fade, language lingers. You might forget who said something, but the words themselves have a way of staying put.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
