‘Tis the time of year for all to start to get festive, and one of the first gifts we think of is the Advent Calendar. Its historical roots are not at all British<\/a><\/strong> but are in 19th-century Germany, where German Protestants created various traditions to mark the 24 days leading up to Christmas. Advent Calendar 2025<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tradition didn’t start out as boxes with gifts in. Many families would draw 24 chalk lines on a door and allow the children to erase one each day. Another custom was lighting a new candle every day in December. Some families were a little more traditionally festive and would hang up 24 religious-themed images, adding one each day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wichern’s Advent wreath<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1839, Johann Hinrich Wichern, a pastor in Hamburg<\/a><\/strong>, created a large wooden wreath with 24 small candles and four large ones for the orphans he ran. They would light one candle every evening and sing songs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The History of the Advent Calendar<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The modern advent calendar with its mini doors, was inspired by a childhood memory of Gerhard Lang. As a child, Lang’s mother attached 24 cookies to a piece of cardboard and let him eat one each day.

The Advent Calendar, first<\/strong> Printed Version<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1908, Lang commercialised the idea, producing the first printed Advent Calendar with 24 small<\/a><\/strong> pictures. He later added the now-familiar small doors in the 1920s<\/a><\/strong>, which would open to reveal the daily picture. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chocolate Advent Calendars<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chocolate-filled Advent calendars didn’t start to appear until the 1950s. Today, the calendars have largely moved beyond their religious roots and are filled with a huge variety of items, including toys, beauty products, and gourmet foods. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
