This would be a Pagoda, a layered traingular tower-like structure with multiple eaves, common in East and Southeast Asian architecture, originating from ancient Indian\u00a0stupas\u00a0and primarily serving as Buddhist religious monuments for prayer, worship, or relic storage, featuring distinctive curved roofs and often <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/love-the-magical-hotels-that-bring-childhood-dreams-to-life\/\"><strong>ornat<\/strong><\/a><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/love-the-magical-hotels-that-bring-childhood-dreams-to-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">e<\/a><\/strong> decorations, found in countries like China, Japan, Nepal, and Thailand.\u00a0Yet go for a walk at some location in the UK, and you too will come across one. But how did they get here, and where are they? Early examples were decorative, while later ones are active Buddhist shrines, reflecting changing cultural interactions with the East.\u00a0 Think in terms that initially range from 18th-century decorative &#8220;follies&#8221; to 20th-century religious monuments and industrial structures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-secondary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-d60540007646d0ddb2e3ab6cf5f30bee wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Porcelain Pagodas<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-secondary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-61223958c8d3cb6346eba8a38383bf23 wp-block-paragraph\">George IV collected miniature porcelain pagodas, highly detailed, reflecting the popularity of Chinese decorative arts in the Royal Pavilion<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left has-secondary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-dfbb485cd98689fd1a521b86ac52c1ac wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Great Pagoda, Kew Gardens<\/strong> (image on left)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left has-secondary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-4fd8c878011c3283d5661baa58349318 wp-block-paragraph\">Known as the\u00a0Great Pagoda, it\u00a0is set in\u00a0Kew Gardens\u00a0in southwest\u00a0London\u00a0and was built in 1761 by\u00a0Sir William Chambers\u00a0as a present for\u00a0Princess Augusta, the founder of the gardens. Constructed of grey brick, the pagoda comprises 10 storeys, totalling 163\u00a0ft with 253 steps to the viewing gallery. It is a\u00a0Grade I listed building. The Pagoda would have been built at the same time as William Chambers\u2019 work at Kew. Chambers wrote a book about Chinese buildings, which was a best-seller. One of Blackheath\u2019s more unusual houses is a house built in the form of a Chinese Pagoda near the heath. It is actually within the London Borough of Lewisham. It was built about 1760 as the summer house for the fourth Earl of Cardigan and his family. The grounds, although some distance away, were originally <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/lush-a-walk-through-the-gardens-of-the-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gardens<\/a><\/strong>, stables and orchards for Montagu House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-secondary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-d59164ca728947e7f175f2a301b05726 wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Peace Pagodas<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-secondary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-fe18f76b66b6e7ba85edd627f0709a42 wp-block-paragraph\">Initially built as\u00a0Buddhist stupas worldwide,  as monuments to promote universal peace, non-violence, and unity, inspired by Japanese monk Nichidatsu Fujii after World War II&#8217;s atomic bombings, serving as places for meditation with Buddha relics and statues, often featuring friezes depicting Buddha&#8217;s life and symbolising hope for a world free from war<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-secondary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-044780d72ee8c675bd4e75fa07e8248f wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Milton Keynes, Peace Pagoda\u00a01980<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Milton-keynes-peace-pagoda-1.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"580\" height=\"779\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Milton-keynes-peace-pagoda-1.jpg?resize=580%2C779&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-189836\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Milton-keynes-peace-pagoda-1.jpg?w=746&amp;ssl=1 746w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Milton-keynes-peace-pagoda-1.jpg?resize=223%2C300&amp;ssl=1 223w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-secondary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-9ab710cf8c468622e0769e4dc7d6d8ac wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-secondary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-04b4317188dc68f0f96e7bb0bdace38a wp-block-paragraph\">The first of its kind in the Western hemisphere, the Milton Keynes Peace Pagoda, built by the Nipponzan Myohoji Buddhist Order, promotes non-violence after WWII, involving local community participation. The Peace Pagoda enshrines sacred relics of Lord Buddha presented from Nepal, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/olfactory-espionage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sri Lanka<\/a><\/strong> and Berlin. The Pagoda frieze is of traditional design and tells the story of Buddha from his birth 2,500 years ago at the foot of the Himalayas to his death at Kusinagara after 50 years of teaching. In 1829, the Duke of Wellington, the then Prime Minister, fought a duel with the Earl of Winchelsea on Battersea Fields, an area of common land south of the Thames, on the opposite bank to the Royal Hospital Chelsea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-secondary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-f2b724421db090121d1de2b5070cf90e wp-block-paragraph\">This area is now Battersea Park, and close to the spot where the duel took place stands the London Peace Pagoda, the Buddhist stupa or temple that was built in 1985.   35.5m high and made of wood and concrete, the stupa was the gift of the Japanese Nipponzan-Myohoji Buddhist order, with 50 volunteers from the order living and working in the park, to clear the site and build the temple. On the four faces of the building are gilded bronze statues, each of which symbolises a key event in the life of the Buddha \u2013 birth, contemplation and enlightenment, teaching and death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-secondary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-69d84b79d16be818908069934085a061 wp-block-paragraph\">A walk outside, breathing in fresh cold air (as long
