A leak at the Louvre has damaged some valuable Egyptian books. Over 400 books are said to have been affected, with some works dating back well over 200 years. The leak happened as a result of contaminated water pipes<\/a>, which burst. The leak also affected some of the offices, which caused them to be somewhat unstable. According to the report, the books that were damaged had been consulted by Egyptologists, but no precious books were affected. The antiquities department attracts millions of people each year. When you combine this with the fact that modern media is helping to sustain the interest, it\u2019s not hard to see why the Louvre\u2019s Egypt section is so popular. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hollywood epics as well as documentary-style productions have helped to shed a light on things like archaeology, and TV shows like Bradley Walsh: Egypt’s Cosmic Code have put a spotlight on some of the more nuanced aspects of the civilisation. The first rooms introduce the characteristics of Egyptian civilisations. It starts with the Nile and the annual flood that happens, which results in plenty of crops. You then have Egyptian architecture, which is represented by the tomb of Akhethotep. As you move forward, you will see an entire room devoted to hieroglyphics, and then another focused on daily life in Egypt<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is complemented by the archival section of Egyptian books, which is the area of the museum that has been damaged. The water damage is said to have come from a faulty valve on the water pipe in the museum. With restoration work underway to ensure that as many of the books are restored, it\u2019s only a matter of time before the area is open as normal. With that said, there does have to be some repair work done to the piping, and to also make sure that the contaminated water source does not go on to affect other parts of the museum. As it stands, however, it seems that the repairs are not extensive and that the issue is going to be resolved fairly quickly. With that said, the museum is overdue for some maintenance work, so it may be that this is looked into at the time of making the repairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
