Weather Forecast<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it hits minus in the city, you know it’s going to be a blue day. Especially if you live somewhere that is not usually within that scale. If your home is regularly, year in year out, a snow-filled city, then minus numbers are not cold. But if you live in a town where everyone is moaning at five degrees, then this low ‘temperature’ is somewhat of a shock.<\/p>\n\n\n

Four Seasons<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In many areas, we have a relatively short winter, spring, and autumn are by no means hot, but winter in the UK, for example, should really only be for three months of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Winter Solstice<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

So on paper it’s December 1st to the end of February\u00a0that makes up Meteorological Winter, but astronomically speaking, winter starts with the\u00a0Winter Solstice\u00a0(around Dec 21st) and ends with the\u00a0Spring Equinox\u00a0(around March 20th). <\/p>\n\n\n

Lose it<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, we understand that exposure to cold, wind, or wet conditions makes the body lose heat faster than it produces it. It may sound obvious, but there is significant heat lost through your extremities, so covering them is essential: hat, gloves, scarves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Old Wives Tales<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

An idea popularised by old military manuals is that 40-45% of heat is lost through the head. In reality, heat loss is proportional to the amount of skin exposed. The head is about 7-10% of surface area, so it loses roughly that percentage of heat if fully exposed.\u00a0 On top of that, when we are dehydrated, the body restricts blood flow to the extremities to conserve water, which can lead to feeling cold. And also, a lack of sleep disrupts the body\u2019s ability to regulate its own temperature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So the best way to keep warm is actually to start with layering your clothes: from your head to your boots, specifically a three-layer approach, using materials that insulate and wick moisture, such as wool, fleece, or specialised thermals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Layering Tops<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Layering traps air between garments, which acts as an insulator, and is far more effective than wearing one thick, heavy layer.\u00a0Fabrics are important here, so think\u00a0of\u00a0Merino Wool, as it has the ability to regulate temperature, keeping you warm even when wet, and is also breathable, or cashmere, which is a soft, high-quality, lightweight insulator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
