War leaves barely anything of happiness, stripping away allure in all its forms. Yet there is always to opportunity to reimagine and rebuild. In the middle of London at the river’s edge, find the Southbank Centre, a testament to eternal hope, joy, creativity and elegance. The hall was built by the London County Council’s Chief Robert Matthew and supported by a team of professional designers, including Leslie Martin, who later continued the project with Edwin William and Peter Moro. This development introduced three more large halls: the Queen Elizabeth Hall, the Purcell Room and the Hayward Gallery. Each was designed in a bold modern style that mirrors the Royal Festival Hall’s pioneering spirit. Together, these buildings transformed the area from a single concert arena to a space for offering music, diverse performances, contemporary art and cultural exchange.

Brutalism London

The Southbank Centre’s brutalist architecture was evidence of the post‑era’s desire for modernity and equality. The buildings were developed by a group of radical young architects directed by Norman Engleback. They featured raw concrete, jagged forms, and sculptural and functional designs for their iconic arts complex beside more elegant modernist structures like the Royal Festival Hall. The Southbank’s brutalist architecture gained significant attention and debate over the years and sparked mixed opinions among people. While some people viewed it as a postwar architectural masterpiece and a symbol of 1960s radicalism, others criticised it as ugly and compared it to a nuclear power station, but it is a perfect yet controversial example of British brutalism.

Iconic Moments

Over the 75 years of its existence, there have been many ground-breaking events and newer spaces created. In 1965, Russian composer Igor Stravinsky, one of the most influential figures of the 20th century, appeared at the Royal Festival Hall for the final London performance of his Firebird Suite, an orchestral concert work. Another of the first major concerts was Pink Floyd’s iconic Games for May.

Cultural Milestones

Four years after the opening of our Hayward Gallery, artist Bridget Riley became the first contemporary painter to have a full-scale retrospective in the venue. Bridget Riley’s paintings and drawings were a major part of the European tour, which included artists’ black and white works, alongside lesser-known paintings, early paintings, and sketches. Half a century later, Riley took over the gallery with the 2019 retrospective. In February 1972, Elton John and his band left a significant mark on the Royal Concert Festival Hall by performing their newly recorded album Honky Chateau, including a live debut of Rocket Man two months before its release as the album’s first single.

Skateboarding

The concrete playground at the Southbank Centre is widely known as the birthplace of British skateboarding. In 1983, the Greater London Council presented its pioneering open-foyer policy that restructured cultural access across the city. Visitors explored and viewed exhibitions, enjoyed lunchtime concerts and evening jazz, and visited shops, bars and places to eat, turning the building into a vibrant, democratic gathering place rather than a venue reserved for ticket holders alone.

Literary Shift

After five years, in 1988, a fresh chapter in the centre’s literary life began. The National Poetry Library started within the Royal Festival Hall and was officially inaugurated by Nobel Prize-winning poet Seamus Heaney. Its beginning made the Southbank Centre feel like home for readers, writers and the wider literary community, broadening its cultural reach beyond performance and visual art.

Rewriting Art

The decade closed with a landmark exhibition that happened at the Hayward Gallery. From November 1989 to February 1990, the gallery showcased the other story, done by artist and writer Rasheed Araeen. This show celebrated the contributions of artists from Africa, Asia and the Caribbean to postwar British art and brought together 24 influential figures, including Sonia Boyce, Mona Hatoum, Lubaina Himid, Iqbal Geoffrey, David Medalla and Keith Piper. It was bold and necessary to re-centre voices too often overlooked in the British art narrative, and it remained one of the Hayward’s most important exhibitions.

Meltdown Festival

The Meltdown Festival at the Southbank Centre is the longest-running artist-curated music festival in the world, and it was first conducted in 1993. Every year, different global figures curate the festival and invite celebrities to perform at various venues. And so, the South Bank’s story circles back to where it began: a riverside once marked by rubble, now alive with footsteps, music and light. The Royal Festival Hall still stands at its centre, not as a monument to the past but as a living character in London’s unfolding narrative. Across Southbank’s 75 years, each decade has added a new chapter the boldness of the 1960s, the experiments of the 1970s, the festivals of the 1990s, the global voices of the 2000s, and the renewed openness that defines the Centre today.

<p class="has-text-align-right has-secondary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-ae66ed15911dc73d86ecc99c0eb1b86b
