A gentle melody suggests calm for a contemplative moment; an up-tempo beat hints at happiness; a familiar key reassures us that we know where we are going. Yet, by the time the final note fades, we may find ourselves, musically, somewhere entirely different, emotionally, intellectually, and even morally than where we began. A record starts gently but ends with unexpected, bashing, power drums. This transformation lies at the heart of a musical paradox: it leads us forward by seemingly going somewhere ‘safe’, and it blows expectations by undoing them. No matter the genre, paradoxes can guide you through different styles of music within one track, breaking boundaries. From classical to prog rock, find out more about how music makes us feel different emotions. Why not find out more and read Musical Changes: An Amazing World of Paradox

Paradox Meaning

This paradox is not a flaw or a trick, but one of music’s most human qualities. Like conversation, memory, or thought itself, music unfolds in time, carrying beginnings that do not fully reveal their endings. What starts in simplicity may deepen into complexity, and what sounds resolved may still leave us unsettled. However, that’s the beauty of it; music can take us on a journey through different styles within one record.

What Music is Playing Now?

Many artists have embraced this approach. A true boundary-breaking style that challenges the idea that music must remain confined to a single genre. Songs like “Superstition” by Stevie Wonder, “Happier Than Ever” by Billie Eilish, “In the Air Tonight” by Phil Collins, “Enough Is Enough” by Donna Summer and Barabra Striesand, “A Day in the Life” by The Beatles, “Stairway to Heaven” by Led Zeppelin, and “Pyramid Song” by Radiohead are just a few examples. Out of the many examples, Stevie Wonder’s “Talking Book” album turned heads on its release for his experimental use of new instruments. A typical example of a musical experiment, but one in which the different genres intertwined harmoniously. Who knew soul, rock, funk and pop could be mixed together?

Rock Music Songs

However, in the midst of paradoxical beauty lies a genre with an extreme case of it. Something rather unusual to our ears. Meet Prog Rock. Also known as Progressive Rock, it developed in the late 60’s, thriving on this almost style of contradiction. Striving to be both intellectual and emotional, structured and chaotic, disciplined yet wildly tolerant. But the important thing is, Prog rock in its heyday demanded patience from the listener while often delivering moments of overwhelming beauty. It caused listeners to stop and feel, it stretched songs into epics, but it obsessed over tiny details. It was seen as geek heaven, but was also much admired (even if sometimes this was behind closed doors). In the end, progressive rock was often regarded as nerdy and unfashionable, even though it was respected for its instrumental mastery.

Different Genres of Rock

Prog rock was also paradoxical in its relationship with tradition. It rebelled against the simplicity of early rock while borrowing heavily from classical, jazz, and even folk music. Imagine a world with all your favourite genres, mixed into one. Prog invited you to hear music not as one fixed thing, but as a journey, lifting your hands in the sky one moment, then pulling you inward, lost in reflection, the next. Rick Wakeman from Yes was full of contradictions. He was an incredibly skilled and classically trained keyboard player who helped shape progressive rock’s big, dramatic sound. But he also didn’t take himself too seriously. Even though his music was often complex and over the top. His sense of humour and down-to-earth attitude set him apart from a genre known for being serious and pretentious.

Prog Rock Songs

Prog rock melodies tended to reject the idea of a short, catchy hook. Rather than repeating predictably, it stretched, twisted, and transformed, often floating over shifting harmonies and obscure sounds. Which in turn made them feel exploratory and narrative rather than decorative. The melodies were lyrical and spiritual, like “Yes” and “Pink Floyd”, or sharp and rhythmic like the band “Rush”. It took listeners on theatrical and uneasy approaches like the group Genesis, or was deliberately fragmented and confrontational, like the King Crimson band. But in every case, they were doing more than just sounding pleasant; they were expressing character, tension, or a story.

It invited listeners not just to feel, but to think, to get lost, confused, challenged, and rewarded. Prog rock insisted that music can be strange and beautiful at the same time. That difficulty does not cancel emotion, and that contradiction itself can be the point. In embracing excess, prog rock exposed the paradox at the heart of music: that meaning often emerges not from simplicity alone, but from the tension between order and chaos. And in that tension, prog rock didn’t just exist, it thrived.

Shakespeare Globe

And that’s where this new collaboration lands. If prog rock thrived on contradiction, then a rock band stepping into the world of classical theatre feels even more confusing. This spring, Placebo are joining forces with the Royal Shakespeare Company to create original music for The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui, an unsettling stage play that reimagines Hitler’s rise to power through the lens of a 1930s Chicago gangster story.

On paper, it sounds unlikely: an alternative rock band known for alienation and intensity working with one of the most traditional theatre institutions in the world. But that tension is exactly the point.

Premiering at the Swan Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon in April 2026, with Placebo composing music that will be performed live throughout the play. It’s their first major theatre project, and it leans into themes they’ve always explored: outsiders, corruption and desire now filtered through Bertolt Brecht’s political style.
