Are these stories? Are they contradictions? Or are they more specifically paradoxes in film? They don’t make sense, and yet all across sci-fi cinema, moments like these are captured, and they suspend us in situations where the future leaks into the past and the living move through the world as if already gone, where logic is allowed to be left outside the theatre. Sometimes it’s about time, something fragile that loops and fractures; time itself is the paradox in film. Or maybe it’s a question of what really is human? Paradox Meaning<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘The only constant in life is change.’ This statement is the perfect example of a paradox: a self-contradictory statement or scenario that appears to defy intuition or common sense, yet often reveals a deeper, underlying truth. But what if we apply paradox to cinema? Does it mean something different altogether? When we think of these situations in film<\/a><\/strong>, it often centres on time travel, logic-defying narratives, or character contradictions, creating time loops specifically meant to challenge audience perception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paradox in Film<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In cinema, paradox is a natural language for science fiction because the genre<\/a><\/strong> treats time, reality, and causation as narrative devices, where logic is allowed to go out the window or be suspended in time. In films, there are multiple instances of this phenomenon with different angles. There is the Bootstrap Paradox, where something becomes the cause of its own existence. Another is the Grandfather Paradox, where altering the past threatens the future and a character’s existence entirely. And the Causal Loop, where events circle back to create themselves. From astronauts undone by their own machines to time travellers accidentally erasing themselves, sci-fi uses this as a way to expose how unstable our sense of time and reality really is, and make us question what is real or fake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2001: A Space Odyssey<\/strong> 1968<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, a mission to Jupiter unravels when the ship’s AI, HAL 9000, turns against the crew out of paranoia, usually considered a human trait; a breakdown caused by conflicting orders, to maintain secrecy about the mission while also never lying. Kubrick inverts the expected roles of human and machine as HAL expresses fear<\/a><\/strong> and self-preservation, while the astronauts themselves are detached and almost mechanical. The paradox in this case is unsettling; the computer appears more human than the humans who built it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
