Were you aware that the name of the flower \u2018Rose\u2019 is actually an anagram of Eros, the Greek God of Love? According to this mythology, Chloris, the goddess of flowers, was walking in the woods one day when she came across a lifeless nymph. Saddened by its untimely demise, she transformed it into a flower so beautiful that it would be judged to be the queen of all flowers by everyone on Mount Olympus. Aphrodite, the goddess of love and mother of Eros, named it \u2018Rose\u2019 in honour of her son. There are other stories throughout history as to why Roses have an association with love. Greek Gods<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another Greek myth has it that when Aphrodite discovered a murder plot against her mortal lover, Adonis, she dashed through a Rose bush to warn him and cut her ankles on its thorns. Her blood turned the white petals red. Upon discovering that she was too late and a wild boar had attacked him, she wept as he died in her arms. Her tears mingled with his blood and burst into anemones.  Because Aphrodite’s beauty was so great that roses sprang up wherever she walked. As a result, red roses became a symbol of love and desire, and were often used in romantic gestures and rituals. Red roses were also associated with Adonis, the Greek god of beauty and desire.<\/p>\n\n\n

Strange but true, evidence suggests that the rose is about 35 million years old, so it’s no surprise that they have been popular throughout history. During the Roman period, they were used for medicinal purposes, as well as confetti with newlywed beds sprinkled with petals, for more than just romance. Ceilings in Roman rooms were adorned with petals, reminding those present that what happened there stayed there. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The War of the Roses<\/strong> (1455\u20131487) <\/p>\n\n\n\n

No, not the film or book, but the series of English bloody civil wars fought between the House of Lancaster, whose heraldic badge was a red Rose and the House of York, whose heraldic badge was a white rose. Both of whom were branches of the royal Plantagenet family, were vying for control of the throne. The conflict, triggered by weak governance under Henry VI and a disputed succession, ended with the triumph of Henry Tudor, and his marriage to Elizabeth of York unified the rival factions. And so the Rose has been the national flower of England ever since.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Flowers also have their own language, no, they don’t speak to each other, well, that we are aware of, yet during the 19th century, lovers would use floriography, or \u2018the language of flowers\u2019, to send covert messages to each other via posies known as tussie-mussies or nosegays; the red Rose, of course, symbolised love, passion, romance and devotion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Art has had its part to play, too. Famous paintings featuring Roses span various styles, from Van Gogh’s vibrant, textured floral studies to dramatic, classical, and impressionistic scenes.  Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema’s extravagant The Roses of Heliogabalus (1888), and Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s Vase of Roses<\/p>\n\n\n
