It may not be that well known, but at one point, the centre of European perfume was Spain<\/a><\/strong>, not France.  Rooted in a rich blend of Arab, Roman, and Mediterranean traditions, originating with Arab invasions that introduced advanced distillation techniques, and new ingredients bringing Rosewater, and intense, warm scents to the land. During the Middle Ages and Renaissance, Spain specialised in scented leather known as ‘Spanish Skin’, and so it became a European centre for perfumery, influencing later French, clean, and floral styles. But it has had a turbulent history in recent years. We are now happy to see many Spanish bands available again in the UK. Meet the latest to arrive on our shores, here in Alvarez G\u00f3mez, A Spanish Icon now in the UK<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spanish Perfume History<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the 8th century, the Caliphate of Cordoba was a powerful, prosperous Arab-Islamic state set up in the Iberian Peninsula. It introduced advanced distillation techniques and raw ingredients like Rosewater and Orange blossom (azahar<\/em>) into the world of Spanish fragrance, which is still deeply integrated into daily life. And so saw the rise of Spanish perfume.<\/p>\n\n\n

From this, Spain gained fame for perfuming leather, specifically gloves, which became a staple luxury for European aristocracy. This was because the tanning process of leather left it smelling rather putrid, so perfuming items from the material made them far more pleasant to wear. Spanish perfumery established strong brands in the 19th and 20th centuries, but things changed on April 1, 1939, when dictator<\/a><\/strong> Francisco Franco commenced his 36-year rule over Spain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under this dictatorship, the Spanish perfume industry was heavily shaped by the regime’s policy of autarky. This meant economic self-sufficiency and the prohibition of imports, meaning perfumes (their ingredients, bottles, parts etc) could only be made with ingredients available in Spain, leaving the country limited in sourcing exotic, international ingredients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Global Trading<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

By being cut off from global trade, the industry was forced to rely exclusively on domestic resources. This led to a concentration of citrus-based scents, as Spain had an abundance of citrus fruits; the Colonia tradition, in the country, blossomed.<\/p>\n\n\n

What developed was a unique, fresh, clean, and juicy perfume culture often used by people of all ages in many different, daily ways. Some houses that opened way before Franoc’s Era still survive today, highlighting the depth of the scent-making industry<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alvarez G\u00f3mez History<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Founded in Madrid in 1899 by three cousins, Herminio \u00c1lvarez G\u00f3mez, Belarmino G\u00f3mez, and Emilio Vuelta G\u00f3mez, Alvarez G\u00f3mez is a historic Spanish perfume house renowned for its 1912 signature Agua de Colonia Concentrada. Starting as a small drugstore, they became famous for Mediterranean-based, natural, and fresh unisex scents that remain a staple in Spain; an institution, if you like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seville<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Initially selling their goods in a small pharmacy on Calle Peligros in Madrid, the cousins later moved to Calle Sevilla. Inspired by a European formula, they created the Colonia Collection, which became a daily ‘national scent’ for generations of Spanish people. For over a century, the formula for the signature cologne has remained unchanged. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its ingredients are all grown in Spain, hence why it has been a consistently available scent. Opening with a beautiful, bright rush of fresh, zesty Lemon alongside, slight green citrus freshness and a hint of floral from Bergamot, melding with floral and herbaceous notes and a hint of soft wood from Lavender. <\/p>\n\n\n

A bold, invigorating opening to this cologne goes into a herby shot in its heart. The Geranium brings a hit of fresh Rose and herbaceous green notes,  whilst the Rosemary brings facets of Pine, Camphor, and woody-Sage, whilst Thyme adds a blend of green, herbaceous, and earthy notes with a sharp, peppery, and slightly minty hint, and finally, the heart has Eucalyptus for Camphor, Mint, and Wood element. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What all these four heart notes also have in common is a tinge of lemon notes, and by doing so, meld the heart and top perfectly. The heart also brings longevity to the freshness, making it bolder and longer-lasting. Its final flourish is aromatics and lavender again to finish off with a lemon hint via a woody trail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Initilled renowned for its classic Agua de Colonia, the house has expanded to include Las Flores de Alvarez Gomez soliflores and the Barberia line. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Barberia collection is described as a ‘masculine’ range that balances classic and modern styles, inspired by traditional barbershop scents. While marketed toward men, some listings do mention it as suitable for both men and women, or as a unisex scent, due to its fresh citrus nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Think of it as an Aromatic-Woody and Oriental. Features top notes of bright citrus Bergamot, Lemon, Bitter Orange, with a ‘hot’ spice of Ginger. The heart brings woody notes of fresh hits of green timber from Cedar, soft woody from Sandalwood, with a kick at the end from resinous animlaic Labdanum, and a softening off with a final flourish of White Musk. The notes collide to blend beautifully with a man’s skin and provide a long-lasting hold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Happily <\/strong>now, the perfume house is run by the third and fourth generations, having grown from a local shop to an internationally recognised name. It has attained iconic status in Spain; their collections are seen as pure sunshine in a bottle. Think of these scents as a reminder of a summer breeze in the day from the Mediterranean coast, the citrus orchards and the Lavender fields, with the warmth of woods, reminiscent of the warm summer night. The house has extended its most noted scent into a selection of auxiliary products across a bathroom range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The olfactory references in Spanish perfumes are broad and reflect many aspects of Spanish culture. Perhaps the most arresting is the overwhelming joy and energy of these scents. Florals too are a speciality of Spain, especially opulent notes like majestic Jasmine and sultry Tuberose. The Spanish perfumers capture the life force and sunshine like no other.
