Among these visionary figures stands Charles-Edouard Jeannetet, better known to the world as Le Corbusier. The modernist master whose architecture reshaped the very grammar of the twentieth century, each contour a new line in the sky. And now, a gesture, not ancient but seen in our time, Rado: the Swiss watchmaker famed for its pioneering high-tech ceramic watches. In the long chronicles of design, two eras, though separated by decades, seem to clasp hands across time. One such moment arrives now, as Rado unveils its True Round x Les Couleurs® Le Corbusier® Special Edition timepieces. A trio of watches, inspired by three of Le Corbusier’s iconic buildings. They do not merely tell time, but sculpt it and cast it in ceramic. It is a meeting of minds separated by time but united by material, form, and an unyielding devotion to beauty. His ‘Polychromie Architecturale’, a palette of colours crafted with almost scientific precision, became a language of its own, guiding architects and designers of generations.

Influential Architect

To speak of Le Corbusier is to speak of a man who saw buildings not as mute structures but as living companions to human life. His works rose from the earth with a clarity that startled the world awake. They stood like manifestos, bold, geometric, unapologetically modern. In an age still draped in ornament, with highly decorated buildings, he carved out a new architectural language, one that favoured clarity over clutter, proportion over pretence, and the honest expression of material over the sentimental mimicry of the past. Where others saw concrete as a crude necessity, he saw a noble substance, capable of poetry, capable of truth.

His masterpieces remain scattered across continents like monumental chapters in the story of modernist architecture: La Cité Radieuse, Marseille. A vertical city of raw beton brut (raw concrete), its surface bearing the honest imprint of its making. The Carpenter Centre for the Visual Arts, Harvard University. A sculptural ribbon of ramps and curves, the only building he ever gifted to North America. The Palace of Assembly, Chandigarh. The colours drawn from Le Corbusier’s Polychromie Architecturale do not sit on the watches: they inhabit them. They feel inevitable, as though the palate had been waiting all along for a medium worthy of its precision.

A New Frontier in Contemporary Horology

Vanguart’s latest evolution of its high‑concept Orb flying tourbillon arrives as a bold study in colour, material and mechanical imagination, transforming what was once a fiercely avant‑garde creation into a piece ready for daily life. At Geneva Watch Week 2026, the independent maison unveiled the Orb Pink Ceramic Titanium and Orb Blue Ceramic Rose Gold. These watches blend sweeping architectural curves with brilliant flashes of coloured ceramic, each sculpted through a year‑long research process to achieve the Orb’s fluid geometry and deep brilliance.

As the world’s first flying tourbillon with a function selector capable of shifting between manual and automatic winding, the Orb already challenged the boundaries of haute horlogerie; now, with ceramic integrated into its case flanks and crown pusher, it gains a new tactility and resilience. Beneath the sculptural 41mm case lies a movement of 395 components, a concave oscillating mass, and a 60‑hour power reserve. These new editions, limited to just 25 pieces each, stand as contemporary artefacts of mechanical art.

In the end, both Rado and Vanguart stand as luminous examples of what happens when watchmaking dares to think like architecture—when form is treated as philosophy, when colour becomes language, and when material is elevated from mere substance to storytelling. Rado channels the disciplined modernism of Le Corbusier, translating concrete, proportion and Polychromie into ceramic creations that feel like fragments of architectural history worn on the wrist. Vanguart, by contrast, pushes into the realm of mechanical theatre, sculpting its Orb flying tourbillons with the audacity of a futurist cityscape, where colour, curvature and complexity collide in brilliant ceramic and metal. Together, these maisons remind us that time is not simply measured; it is shaped. It can be cast in concrete hues or spun through a vortex of titanium and light. And in their hands, the watch becomes more than an instrument; it becomes a structure, a sculpture, a companion to the imagination, carrying the past and the future together in one enduring gesture of beauty.

If you enjoyed reading Rado
