Isn\u2019t it ironic that after centuries of drawing, sculpting, and painting the human body, artists still don\u2019t seem to have had their final say? After all this time, the body remains one of the most significant and expressive subjects in modern art. The classical vision of the body has disappeared, replaced by forms and shapes that seem distorted and abstracted to explore modern issues and points of view. Rather than faithfully reproducing anatomy, many artists began to see the body as a source of movement, rhythm, and emotional energy. Its curves, tensions, and volumes inspired new visual languages in which the body was no longer represented directly, but translated into abstract and organic forms. Body Representations<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is art only about bodies? Some may think that human bodies have been the origin of all kinds of art<\/a><\/strong>, from cave paintings to modern sculptures, passing through Renaissance art. Artists go back to it again and again; however, some of them might have given us a doorway for reflection on our own selves, minds, and bodies by playing with their shapes and contours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They redefined the concept of beauty, making it abstract and even absurd. Modern art does not simply abandon the body; it reimagines it, transforming physical form into a poetic language of shapes that convey sensation, vitality, and emotion. When did people start to play with it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Modern art <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nowadays, artists continue to explore the body and to push the limits of art. Reinventing beauty and bodies, they created bold yet emotional artworks that can make one question their own vision of human nature in relation to natural environments, instilling the idea that one is inherent in the other, and vice versa.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deformed Shapes<\/strong> In Art<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some artists have been playing with contours, making them look practically unrecognisable, and destroying the usual perception of the human figure, using anatomical elements to compose their work. These different points of view allow us to take a step back and imagine shapes<\/a><\/strong> and body contours from another perspective. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pablo Picasso is a widely known Spanish painter who experimented with cubism, surrealism, and modern art. His artworks, \u2018Two Women on the Beach\u2019 (1956) or \u2018Two Women in Front of a Window\u2019 (1927), depict ‘reformed’ bodies that we can associate with women but that are practically unrecognisable. By reshaping the human body in this way, Picasso challenges traditional ideas of beauty<\/a><\/strong> and representation through his cubist vision. He saw the images of objects, places and people as 3D, but drew them as 3D, hence why everything looked ‘distorted’.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rebuilding<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alberto Giacometti, in his work named \u2018Table\u2019, created in 1933, recomposed a body from scratch using its limbs <\/em>to create a piece of furniture. Using a body to create something completely, as well as observing what seems like a strange melting pot, can bring discomforting feelings and curiosity to those who may view it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Giacometti, by deforming shapes, was moving the beauty where no one\u2019s expecting it, and showing that bodies are maybe more than just skin <\/a><\/strong>and contours; here, he blurred the boundary between the organic and the functional. The body is no longer depicted as a living figure but becomes the structural basis of an object. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

L\u2019Arte Povera<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Giuseppe Penone is an Italian artist inspired by the movement ‘L\u2019Arte Povera’. The artistic movement founded in Germany during the 1960s encouraged a return to the roots and essentials of art, particularly prompting reflections on the relationship between nature and culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An artist who likes to use his own body in his work, creating a direct relationship between body and art, between human and nature. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Soffio 6\u2019 by Giuseppe Penone<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

His sculpture, named \u2018Soffio 6\u2019, made in 1978, and currently exhibited in the Centre Pompidou in Paris, is a daring and curious piece of art. Made of clay and featuring Penone\u2019s body, it is a questioning piece that blurs the frontier between art and body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Henry Moore, 30 July 1898 – 31 August 1986<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Henry Moore was a British sculptor, best known for his abstract sculptures out of bronze and marble. His sculptures suggest that the body is not separate from nature but part of it. Instead of representing the human figure realistically, he simplified and transformed it into smooth, abstract forms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the next exhibition of his work at Kew Gardens, starting on May 9th 2026, Moore\u2019s sculptures will be sublimated by a stunning setting and will demonstrate that the curves of a body can mirror the contours of a landscape. The body is becoming almost geological, as if it has been shaped by wind, water, and time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Barbara Hepworth, 10 January 1903 – 20 May 1975<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Barbara Hepworth was a British artist, recognised for her paintings and sculptures, which, like her contemporary Henry Moore, explore the relationship between the human body and nature in a way that is both abstract and emotional. She believed that, by representing bodies in curves, tension and emotion, they could echo natural landscapes and structures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘I, the sculptor, am the landscape. I am the form and the hollow, the thrust and the contour’ <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Barbara Hepworth<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her work, \u2018Winged Figure\u2019, was created in 1963 and mounted on the fa\u00e7ade of the John Lewis Oxford Street building in London. It is a striking example of how she used to represent both abstract and deeply sensuous artworks. The work reflects Hepworth\u2019s interest in space, balance, and light, as she blurs the line between people and nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jean Arp, 16 September 1886 \u2013 7 June 1966<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hans Arp, best known as Jean Arp, was a German-French painter, sculptor and poet. He was associated with movements such as Dada and later Surrealism, and he believed that art should reflect the spontaneous processes of nature. His work is characterised by a strong belief that art should be a mirror of the roughly naive spontaneity defined by the processes of nature. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

His pieces are, unlike those of his contemporaries Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth, less obvious in their link to the human body. However, his work \u2018Cloud Shepherd\u2019, created in 1961, shows how Arp blurred the boundaries between human, natural, and abstract forms. The sculpture appears soft and fluid, almost like a cloud transformed into a solid shape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Constantin Br\u00e2ncu\u0219i, 19 February 1876 – 16 March 1957<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Constantin Br\u00e2ncu\u0219i was a Romanian artist naturalised as a French citizen, mostly known for his sculptures and regarded as one of the most influential sculptors of the early 20th century. His artworks are characterised by a distance from realistic representations of the curves and shapes of bodies by reducing them to their \u2018pure essence\u2019 for simple depiction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Br\u00e2ncu\u0219i sought to capture what he called the \u2018inner reality\u2019 or essence of a subject. In this respect, he simplified bodies to capture what lies inside, and stripped away any detail he found unnecessary. His sculpture \u2018Torso of a Young Man\u2019 is a great embodiment of this idea of emotional depth, rather than visual accuracy. Here, Br\u00e2ncu\u0219i captures the idea of vitality and youthful physical power, and conveys a sense of authenticity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ultimately, the persistence of the human body in modern art shows that it is far more than just a subject to replicate; it is a source of inspiration and experimentation, requiring understanding along with a never-ending fountain of emotion and meaning. The body, in the artist\u2019s hands, becomes a space where feeling and form meet. For us as viewers, it is here for us to explore our own sense of body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
