Who doesn’t love a scented candle? Well, a good scented candle, to be more accurate? The leaders in the field have always been and are likely to continue to be Diptyque, the French scent house. They started the trend back in  1963 with three scents: Aub\u00e9pine, Cannelle, and Th\u00e9. Initially, part of their fabric designs store at 34 Boulevard Saint-Germain, Paris<\/a><\/strong>, the three founders, Yves Coueslant, Christiane Gautrot, and Desmond Knox-Leet, went on to revolutionise how we perfume our homes and ourselves. This 2026 spring their is some more newness from the house, meet the new set of scented candles and the refill system in The Scented Room with Extra Moments to Love<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

History of Scented Candles<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For thousands of years, the idea of a scented home was part and parcel of many civilisations, many for those who could afford such luxuries. The Egyptians<\/a><\/strong>, who were big contributions to the world of perfumery, were some of the earliest adopters of primitive candles. Made from an animal fat called tallow, they used essential oils to create pleasing fragrances, not only for lighting but also in religious rituals, where the scent was believed to please the gods and purify spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ancient China and Japan<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In ancient China and Japan, scented candles were often used for ceremonial purposes, with a focus on meditation and spiritual enlightenment. In Europe, their use declined until the Renaissance, when candles started to regain their popularity in European<\/strong> <\/a>society. The elite began to burn candles made from beeswax, usually not fragranced, but it really wasn’t until the 20th century that the use of scented candles also began to tie into emerging Western notions of wellness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mood Setters<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But there was a shift in the 1980s and 1990s, initially when people started to scent their homes seasonally. Think of the smells of spices, tangerines, and burning fires synonymous with Christmas<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Diptyque<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then quite quickly, people adopted the idea of scented candles as mood-setters, think luxury, and ambience, whether this be to create a special place or a calming mood; a fragranced candle being the gift so many wished for. And the most desired brand of all? Diptyque<\/a><\/strong>. Part of the reason they still reign supreme is because of the care and attention to detail utilised, and the levels of perfume concentrate used. All are still made in France. There are eight stages involved in creating one single piece, some still crafted by hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New Scents from Diptyque<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a house, the brand led the way in home scenting, and as of today, April 2026, Diptyque welcomes five remarkable perfumed candles to the collection. Caf\u00e9 (Coffee), Ortie (Nettle), S\u00e9same Noir (Black Sesame), Rhubarbe (Rhubarb) and Shiso.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Caf\u00e9 brewed to perfection<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Caf\u00e9, love or not, the aroma of the brew is astounding. Think of the warmth of roasted beans, hypnotic and delicious, the Parisian cafe experience, the sun shining on a spring day, a warm coffee in the hand, brought to life via this candle.<\/p>\n\n\n

Ortie (Nettle), don’t sting<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those nettles remind us of childhood, trampling through woods and overgrown fields, their sharp green freshness a warning not to touch. But now we can get closer with the new candle with its fresh watery green lively perfume, taking us immediately to the outdoors without leaving our comfy sofa; this nettle becomes a regal plant.<\/p>\n\n\n

S\u00e9same Noir (Black Sesame), but not to eat<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deeply aromatic, nutty, and savoury, the roasted sesame is black after its meeting with heat, a taste synonymous with pleasure, here is caught in wax and gifted in a glass. It meets its roasting partner, Wood, to accentuate the pleasure. <\/p>\n\n\n

The Shiso Leaf<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This highly aromatic, herby leaf may well be known to us from Japanese cuisine. Often called Japanese<\/a><\/strong> basil, it has a unique, pungent taste often described as a mix of cinnamon, clove, citrus, and mint. Encased here, the Shiso candle brings the facets from fresh to spicy alongside soft notes of Almond. <\/p>\n\n\n

Rhubarbe (Rhubarb)<\/strong> Season<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is the season in the UK, spring 2026, for this delicious fruit. Bold fruit and acid from its long pink stalks make it a natural perfumed note. A ying yan of a Rhubarb scent, with notes of woods and vegetal facets to highlight the earthy garden fruit that is as vivacious as a garden plant can be. Also, it’s delicious.<\/p>\n\n\n

More Newness from Diptyque<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interestingly, all these notes are forms of gourmand yet here medled by crafted knowledge, nothing is not true, here to its ingredient, but each accentuated to bring the very best elements of each alive, vibrant, comforting and elegant. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But this is not all the newness from Diptyque. Their famous glass jars have been reworked. Diptyque\u2019s redevelopment of its classic candle has been revisited and reworked by Julie Richoz, a Franco-Swiss designer. She has subtly adjusted the vessel\u2019s contours, an oval-shaped ridge of glass now carves out the perimeter of the label in an interplay of graphic resonances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Diptyque has always envisaged a second life for the vessel that houses its scented candles. Once the candle is finished, the vessel can be repurposed as a vase, a pencil pot, whatever you may wish. But in autumn 2026, the classic candle keeps the flame alive, emerging as a lasting object. Ten emblematic fragrances from the herbarium of scents are now available as refills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The aim of the House, following a development process that lasted over three years, was to maintain the aesthetic codes and sensorial identity of the classic candle while working on the environmental impact of producing it. Such attention to detail is part of the Diptyque philosophy, and the object that emerges is beautiful, desirable and enduring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To the naked eye, the classic candle seems unchanged, yet, with eco-responsibility in mind, the material has been reworked so as to reduce the vessel\u2019s weight by 10%. The final stage of the process is the refill, which indefinitely prolongs the useful life of the vessel for the scented candle. It is sold ready for use in a protective casing made of \u201cpaperfoam\u201d, a biosourced and recyclable material containing cellulose fibres similar to those used in paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, just as a final touch, and in recognition of the new designs, Diptyque unveils an exceptional communication platform designed to strengthen the narrative around this emblematic object. A film has been envisioned as an artistic, contemplative object. It invites viewers to observe the candle\u2019s combustion within an extended, almost hypnotic temporality. Designed as a time-lapse, the film follows the transformation of matter and the dance of the flame, in direct resonance with the 50 hours of burn time of this iconic candle<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In London and South Korea, an unprecedented continuous 50-hour broadcast will be shown; in Hong Kong, nine-minute excerpts will be aired every hour from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. over the course of one week. The film will also be available on YouTube in a 12-hour version inspired by ambient video content designed to create an atmosphere, to soothe, our work, rest, and sleep, establishing a continuous visual and sound environment<\/p>\n\n\n\n
