The 64th edition of Salone del Mobile is just kicking off in Milan, running until April 21–26, at the show space and around the city. Already unfolding, several major ‘design directions’ are beginning to be clear. The fair has been so successful, and by the mid 1970s, its international reputation soared, expanding beyond furniture to include specialised design sectors. Every year, the great and the good descend on the Fiera Milano, Rho site, with over 370,000 professional visitors from more than 18 countries attending. It is such a dynamic and important event that now the whole city of Milan gets involved with pop-up events spread across the area.

Thought For Humans

After last year’s Thought For Humans theme, the 2026 edition is seemingly doubling down on the ideas of emotional intelligence in design and technological invisibility. A layered context, constructed as a sequence of spaces, in which each element contributes to the definition of a complex equilibrium.

Invisible Smart Technology

One of the most significant shifts is the move away from ‘gadgety’ tech. The trends are seen in showcase furniture where AI and sensors are completely hidden. Last year, a kitchen material manufacturer showed a marble work surface that acted like a phone or tablet screen, where no buttons or switches were visible; just move your hand over the surface to get things done. Still in its earliest development, this new trend is beginning to come alive this year. The Brera Design District theme is Connected Worlds, which focuses on how digital connectivity can actually foster physical human interaction rather than replace it.

Home Surfaces

For example, kitchen surfaces that recognise ingredients to adjust lighting or temperature, and sofas that subtly shift ergonomic support based on your posture, all without a single visible screen or button. Think of it like a ‘responsive minimalism’.

Salone Raritas & Collectable Design

A major new focus for 2026 is the Salone Raritas space, a dedicated platform for unique, ‘outsider‘, and collectable pieces. It’s as if the creeping growth of AI is having a sort of pushback. This is a chair, and it is also the relationship between two chairs. A metal chair, cast from aluminium, is physically held within the arms of a mahogany wood chair. It is not a retreat from reality, but a way of negotiating it. In this collection, irony sits at the core, allowing contradiction to remain visible and tension to be held.
