Whether in cinema, visual art, literature<\/strong><\/a>, music, or an artist\u2019s entire work, history can be shaped by the smallest choices. A new jazz film for 2026 about an iconic music moment, the story of the K\u00f6ln Concert in 1975 reminds us how some of the most important works in music, cinema, and literature almost never came to exist. Would you risk everything, your mental health, your physical health, and even fall into addiction just to leave a mark on the world of cinema? Would you have gone all the way? Francis Ford Coppola did. But does that prove his dedication to the seventh art? When discussing the most chaotic film productions in history, one title often comes to mind ‘Apocalypse Now’ (1979), directed by Francis Ford Coppola. Widely regarded as one of the most cursed productions ever, the film faced countless obstacles. Poor timing, budget problems, cast departures, replacements, accidents, addictions, conflicts, fires, and endless delays all threatened to stop the project from ever being completed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coppola himself showed remarkable determination by finishing the film. However, he did not escape the production’s so-called curse himself, suffering intense psychological pressure, health problems and growing doubts about the quality of the footage being shot. The atmosphere on set was equally troubled. Substance abuse was common, tensions regularly erupted between members of the crew, and the production faced several shocking incidents. Among the most disturbing were reports that real human corpses had been brought onto the set, leading to police involvement and further delays. The entire production was marked by constant uncertainty and tension. Yet this apparent curse was eventually transformed into a blessing. Despite all its difficulties, Apocalypse Now became one of the greatest classics<\/a><\/strong> in cinema history. How could a production surrounded by so many problems become such a masterpiece? Perhaps the answer lies in the film itself. The chaos behind the camera mirrored the madness portrayed on screen, creating an experience unlike any other. What seemed destined to fail ultimately became one of the most influential films ever made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Going back to 1816, this was the famous ‘Year Without a Summer’, when one of the greatest stories ever written was born. Thanks to a remarkable chain of events, a true domino effect of historical and artistic circumstances led to the creation of this literary masterpiece. The eruption of Mount Tambora in Indonesia in 1815 caused global temperatures to fall dramatically. The following year became known as the ‘Year Without a Summer’, so as a result, several English writers spent much of the summer<\/strong><\/a> indoors at Villa Diodati.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among them were Mary Shelley and Lord Byron. To pass the time, they read ghost stories and discussed scientific ideas. One evening, Lord Byron challenged everyone to write their own horror story. Soon afterwards, Mary Shelley experienced a vivid nightmare that would inspire Frankenstein. She imagined a scientist creating life through scientific and electrical experiments, giving existence to an artificial creature. The book was first published anonymously in 1818 and quickly gained attention. At the time, many female authors published anonymously because they were often not taken seriously by readers and publishers. In 1831, Mary Shelley revised Frankenstein extensively, creating the version that is best known today. Frankenstein was therefore born from an extraordinary sequence of events: a volcanic eruption, a year without summer, isolation at Villa Diodati, Lord Byron’s challenge, and Mary Shelley’s nightmare. Together, they created one of the most famous myths in literary history and a story that continues to influence popular culture today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dreams are an essential element in the creation of a classic, whether in storytelling or music. Some classics were never planned at all, but came directly from a dream<\/a><\/strong>. One of the most famous examples comes from 1964\u20131965, when Paul McCartney dreamt of a complete melody. When he woke up, he immediately went to the piano to recreate what he had heard in his sleep. The melody felt so perfect that he even doubted himself, wondering if he had copied it from somewhere without realising it. However, after playing it to people around him, no one recognised it. This melody would later become one of The Beatles’ most famous songs, ‘Yesterday’. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is quite different from their usual style: more melancholic, calm, and deeply emotional, which helped it reach a much wider audience. It holds a special place in people\u2019s minds and remains one of the greatest classics in music history. However, the creation of the song was not simple, as it remained unfinished for months. McCartney struggled to find the right lyrics during this period. When it was finally completed, he believed that ‘Yesterday ‘ might be the most complete and perfect song he had ever written. In contrast, John Lennon was more sceptical at first, feeling that the song was too different from The Beatles\u2019 usual style. Despite this, McCartney strongly believed in its potential and insisted on keeping it. ‘Yesterday ‘ became a worldwide success upon its release. It reached a much broader audience thanks to its simplicity and emotional depth. It is also considered one of the most covered songs in music history, with artists such as Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, and Ray Charles. This is another example of how a dream can create something timeless, a vision that almost never existed, yet went on to influence hundreds of other works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Franz Kafka<\/strong>, Writer<\/strong>  1883 – 1924<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, what if I told you that the entire work of one person, the life\u2019s work of a literary legend, was left in the hands of someone else? Franz Kafka, shortly before his death, wished for all of his writings to be destroyed. He therefore wrote a letter to his close friend Max Brod, asking him to burn all of his unpublished manuscripts. Everything he had created was placed in another person\u2019s hands. Kafka was highly self-critical and a perfectionist, and so he often considered his own texts to be unfinished or imperfect and wanted them to disappear. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, he had already destroyed a large part of his work during his lifetime. So this leads to an important question: how many great works of literature might we have lost forever? Max Brod, however, refused to obey Kafka\u2019s request. Instead, he chose to preserve and publish his manuscripts. Thanks to this decision, works such as The Trial (1925) and The Castle (1926) were saved and later became world-famous. The Kafka paradox is striking: a writer who wanted to disappear became one of the most influential authors in the world. His legacy survived only because of one act of disobedience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The David Statue<\/strong>, by Michelangelo <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The David by Michelangelo is often reduced today to a simple nude statue, yet its story goes much deeper. Unlike some modern interpretations, the nude figure was not considered shocking in Renaissance Italy. From the 15th century onwards, the Church was already familiar with depictions of classical nude figures such as Venus, Apollo, or Hercules. But what makes the David truly remarkable is how close it came to never existing at all. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The origin of the sculpture lies in a massive block of Carrara marble originally intended for the Florence Cathedral. This single piece of stone became the main obstacle to the project. It had already been started by one sculptor, then abandoned, and later attempted again by another artist, before being left untouched for decades. Because of its poor condition, narrow shape, and structural flaws, it was considered extremely difficult to work with, and many believed it was almost impossible to turn into a finished statue. For a long time, the project was seen as close to failure, not because of the idea itself, but because of the material. The marble itself almost prevented the artwork from ever being created. In 1501, Michelangelo was finally given the commission to work on this problematic block. Between 1501 and 1504, he transformed what many considered unusable stone into one of the greatest masterpieces of the Renaissance. The fate of the project lay in the hands of a single piece of marble that seemed impossible to work with. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some masterpieces almost don’t happen. In the case of the film ‘K\u00f6ln 75’, it is not the film itself but the story it tells that came close to never existing. Rather than focusing on Keith Jarrett, an American jazz pianist and composer, the film shines a light on the person behind an important event, Vera Brandes. The film is inspired by real events, a German\u2013Polish\u2013Belgian biographical production directed by Ido Fluk and released in 2025. The film follows the young concert promoter Vera Brandes, who in 1975 organised a jazz concert by Keith Jarrett in Cologne. This event later led to the famous album ‘The K\u00f6ln Concert’.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Performed and recorded at the Cologne Opera House in West Germany on 24 January 1975, The K\u00f6ln Concert was a live solo piano album by Keith Jarrett and went on to be released the same year by ECM Records, becoming the best-selling solo jazz album and the best-selling piano album of all time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The film shows how Vera, still a high school student and passionate about jazz, began organising concerts at a very young age. After discovering Keith Jarrett at a jazz festival in Berlin, she set herself the goal of bringing him to Cologne. Convincing the Cologne Opera to rent her a hall, raising enough money in a short time, promoting the concert, and selling tickets were far from easy tasks. The difficulties kept increasing right up to the day of the performance. Vera Brandes, at the age of 18 and with great courage, defies her conservative parents to organise the Keith Jarrett concert. Her determination is tested by many obstacles: finding a venue, promoting the event, selling tickets, and above all convincing Jarrett to perform. At one point, he even considers cancelling when the promised B\u00f6sendorfer grand piano cannot be found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The film highlighted a little-known story: a night that almost never happened. Despite all the difficulties, the concert went ahead and became a fully improvised performance lasting around one hour, later regarded as one of the most famous jazz recordings in history. Today, ‘The K\u00f6ln Concert’ is considered one of the best-selling solo piano and jazz albums of all time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
