Cinema is fascinated with outsiders; the universal desire to belong and be understood makes for great storytelling. And as a theme, it has been explored in many forms. It follows a thirteen-year-old girl named Lou, a gifted child who struggles with connecting to peers in school. With a mother who is clinically depressed and withdrawn, and a father doing his best to keep the family together, Lou is left living in her own mental bubble. To kickstart his career, he responds to a news advert calling for new members of the Ku Klux Klan. The deeply racist far-right group, of course, directly clashes with Ron&#8217;s skin colour. The film takes place on a remote stretch of a highway, where German tourist Jasmin M\u00fcnchgstettner walks into a motel cafe in what seems like a far-flung outpost of America after arguing with her husband. What follows is a series of events that explore what it means to be alone among locals in a foreign country who seem to view you with suspicion and distrust. It is drenched in vivid colours, and Jevetta Steele&#8217;s &#8216;Calling You&#8217; plays at various points of the film, conveying a mirage-like feeling. All of the characters in the film are uniquely memorable, and there is a sweetness in the unlikely found family that forms from a foundation of awkwardness and cross-cultural misunderstanding. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-secondary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-c1a4b55cfb283fbce2052fb014eb8ee6 wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Paris, Texas<\/em>, 1984 Film By Wim Wenders<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-secondary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-e72f2554cdb3f3dd22d2d67f5d765f71 wp-block-paragraph\">&#8216;Paris, Texas&#8217;<em> <\/em>is a fascinating example of being on the outside in a place where you were once an insider. The plot focuses on Travis Henderson, a man who, after being missing for four years, is discovered by his brother and reunited with his son. As he tries to revive the life he let wither away, the viewer can&#8217;t help but ask if one can reinvent themselves after years of mistakes and self-imposed isolation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-secondary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-1d4bb8aa0c549ff603b74786b7579f00 wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Karthik Calling Karthik<\/em>, 2010 Indian Film By Vijay Lalwani&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-secondary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-a66110fb6901fbc5a9b9ddcf87e31224 wp-block-paragraph\">What if you were jerked awake by a phone ring, and on the other line, it was yourself? &#8216;Karthik Calling Karthik&#8217; is an Indian psychological thriller about a timid and self-conscious man, overpowered by childhood trauma, named Karthik, who simply can&#8217;t seem to find his footing in life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-secondary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-163a4f4bf3019ed82b1d17ba96958b29 wp-block-paragraph\">His boss humiliates him, while the woman of his <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/love-the-magical-hotels-that-bring-childhood-dreams-to-life\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/love-the-magical-hotels-that-bring-childhood-dreams-to-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dreams<\/a><\/strong> is practically oblivious to his existence. Karthik&#8217;s alienation drives him to prepare for a suicide attempt when, suddenly, he receives a mysterious call. Upon picking up the phone, he hears his own voice. The phone calls become frequent, ringing daily at five in the morning with instructions on how he can improve his life. It follows a motorcycle gang of greasers staying in a small rural town en route to Daytona. They immediately come into conflict with the locals, even though in reality, they are a relatively subdued group. Their outsider identities inform their lifestyle, as society views them with suspicion even before they speak. (Hatred breeds hatred!)&#8217;: That is the iconic line where the film takes its title. &#8216;La Haine&#8217; is a French social thriller starring Vincent Cassel of &#8216;Taxi Driver&#8217;<em> <\/em>(1976), which follows three men coming from a poor Parisian immigrant neighbourhood. Unlike &#8216;The Loveless&#8217;, which portrays a group of outsiders penetrating a suburban town, the characters of &#8216;La Haine&#8217; are outsiders within their own community. Instead of having trust in authorities to protect their right to exist, people feel that they are being viewed as suspects, outcasts in a place that should be home. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-secondary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-3e46df01b3017be66c5ac11a97c144bf wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>All Of Us Strangers<\/em>, 2024 British Film By Andrew Haigh<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-secondary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-428ccb0c43271b095dbcaad7e5572f9a wp-block-paragraph\">Silence can often embolden grief and separation from the present. &#8216;All Of Us Strangers&#8217; is a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/verse-velvet-and-vanity-love-the-french-romantics-dandies\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/verse-velvet-and-vanity-love-the-french-romantics-dandies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">romantic<\/a><\/strong> fantasy starring Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal. It delves into the question of what it means to live in a reality clouded by ties to the past and words left unsaid. At the centre of the story is Adam, a lonesome screenwriter who lives in a dystopian-looking block of flats. As the parents reach out to various care professionals and psychologists, their frustration grows when unanswered questions lead to more confusion. The film engages with how the system fails in dealing with children whose mental health struggles cannot be explained with a diagnosis. The paralysing powerlessness hangs over the family, time and time again. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-secondary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-b73f5c483f72a196723476228c7b9339 wp-block-paragraph\">In the second part of the film, Sasha is older, an established filmmaker. Jeremy has now passed, and she attempts to piece together advice from modern-day care professionals, a conversation with one of his previous psychologists who knew the family in the 90s, and her own remembrances of both his recklessness and softness for a profoundly personal film project. There is a motif of looking through windows, corridors, and listening through the walls, which emboldens his alienation from the family. More importantly, though, it shows the indecipherable truth.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-secondary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-b790020c234325c96113556c4bb27bde wp-block-paragraph\">The older Sasha has never ceased battling with the sense that there is much she doesn&#8217;t remember, and even more that neither she nor the family will ever understand about Jeremy.
