You may well remember the book from your childhood but not know that the novel ‘The Secret Garden’ came to Frances Hodgson Burnett while she was renting Great Maytham Hall in Kent, England, between 1898 and 1907. While living there, Burnett discovered an old, forgotten walled garden on the property that had been neglected for years. The idea of these private spaces has caught our imagination from time immemorial and has now even inspired a new perfume from Amouage called Love Hibiscus for summer 2026. Secret Garden <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The creaky iron door was blocked by overgrown ivy<\/a><\/strong>. She managed to open it and went on to share the space with a friendly robin she tamed, and spent hours planting roses inside her private sanctuary. The book may have been published in 1911, but the concept of it goes far further back. It spans across ancient religious texts, medieval love poetry, and practical British estate designs before it ever became a staple of children’s literature.<\/p>\n\n\n

The literal origin of the secret garden is the Latin term hortus conclusus, which translates to ‘enclosed garden. It first appeared in the Old Testament’<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the Middle Ages, this metaphor became highly physical. Catholic art and theology adopted the enclosed garden as a symbol for the Virgin Mary: a pure, untainted, protected space. In fact, across its history, it became a powerful idea explored through ancient myths of rebirth and healing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our fascination with secret gardens taps into something deeply rooted in human psychology, literature, and our relationship with the modern world. It is an enduring obsession because it combines the thrill of discovery with a universal need for sanctuary<\/a><\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Garden Design<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In design and psychology, there is a concept known as ‘defensible space’: a buffer zone, if you like. A secret garden requires a physical barrier, a high stone wall, a dense hedge, a rusted iron gate. But what may we expect to grow there?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Flower Know<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If we wanted to take the idea of this magical walled space and plant a real version to capture its true essence, then the plant selection needs to hit three notes. Concealment, as it has to be a hidden space. Romance is core, so it should include classic, fragrant blooms. And enchantment, so it should include plants that feel a little wild, magical, or nostalgic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Magic Notes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Magical, fragrant and ancient flora and fauna found in secret gardens hold within their DNA secrets and scents that have also, for centuries, allowed these to be shared in the art of perfumery. Long before fragrance was sold in glossy glass<\/a><\/strong> bottles, extracting the scent of a plant was considered a sacred, deeply spiritual act of magic, medicine, and science. In antiquity, perfumery wasn’t cosmetic; it was the ultimate mastery of botanical secrets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amouage New Perfume Love Hibiscus 2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the niche fragrance house Amouage, a special flower blooms in their secret garden: hibiscus. It boasts a rich history dating back thousands of years to West Africa and Southeast Asia. Revered by ancient Egyptian<\/a><\/strong> pharaohs as a sacred and medicinal beverage called ‘karkade’, the plant was heavily traded globally. It was also consumed by Egyptian royalty for its cooling properties and used in religious healing ceremonies, and still has deep symbolism across tropical cultures worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fresh hibiscus flowers are incredibly subtle, and wide varieties are actually scentless. When a fresh bloom does have a fragrance, it typically emits a gentle, slightly green floral aroma with a delicate, earthy undertone, but it will often find it blended with rich, tropical notes like coconut, vanilla, and passionfruit<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amouage’s take on this biblical bloom is Love Hibiscus, a tropical floral-gourmand fragrance. Its enigmatic, vibrant, even tropical opening is created with sweet-salt from Salted Caramel, vibrant lusciousness of Passion Fruit, and bright yet green tones from Bergamot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its heart is an exploration of depth via Hibiscus, Orris, and Frankincense. The flower brings a bright, slightly sour, and tropical freshness that cuts through the fragrance’s sweet, pastry accord opening; the Orris allows for an earthy, powdery hug, whilst the Frankincense brings a grounding, rooty, yet smooth and luminous facet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its final flourish brings the soft wood of smooth, velvety Sandalwood alongside a sweet, creamy kiss of Vanilla and an earthy, woody, and subtly smoky foundation <\/a><\/strong>from the Cypriol that grounds the vibrant, tropical fruits and sugary notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is a perfectly balanced bright fruity top with a warm, creamy, and slightly powdery base and an earthy, rich finish, expertly crafted by perfumer J\u00e9r\u00f4me Epinette.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Love Hibiscus joins the four existing Secret Garden perfumes. Lilac Love combines Cocoa Bean with Lilac. Blossom Love blends Amaretto and Cherry Blossom. Love Tuberose mixes Chantilly Cream with Tuberose and Love Delight juxtaposes Heliotrope with Ginger and Vanilla <\/p>\n\n\n\n
