It has changed the way we connect, the way we think and speak, the way we present ourselves and the way we interact with news.<\/p>\n<p>It has been a revolutionising tool, allowing family and friends to remain up to date on the other side of the globe and giving everyone, especially celebrities, the opportunity to have control over their image. The\u00a0marketing advantages of social media\u00a0has meant that anyone can\u00a0promote their products or themselves over the internet without costly advertising which has resulted in the creation of numerous successful companies and the rise\u00a0of citizen bloggers.<\/p>\n<p>Morally, it has allowed consumers to challenge big brands and backed by the cyber community they achieve positive results.\u00a0Such is the case of <a href=\"http:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2015\/08\/17\/man-becomes-locked-in-epic-battle-with-tesco-after-falling-foul-of-drinks-offer-5347412\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jonny\u00a0Spencer<\/a>\u00a0who wrote a mostly comical yet disgruntled Facebook message to supermarket giant Tesco about misleading signage.<\/p>\n<p>And before the ice bucket challenge hardly anyone knew anything about ALS, social media not only helped to raised funds to find a cure for this disease but also raised awareness. It doesn&#8217;t just\u00a0serve a social purpose, during\u00a0the Arab spring uprisings social media\u00a0allowed civilians to educate themselves and unite under the same political aim.<\/p>\n<p>Although\u00a0it has been a fantastic source of cross continental unification it has also made\u00a0us\u00a0passive and given way to; what pop-artist Celina Teague describes as, &#8216;Slacktivism&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Teague&#8217;s exhibition <a href=\"http:\/\/kristinhjellegjerde.com\/exhibitions\/16\/overview\/\" target=\"_blank\">&#8216;I think therefore I #&#8217;<\/a> was influenced by the visuals of global atrocities in the news that also made their way on to her social media newsfeeds. These harrowing images shared by users with accompanied hashtags of support were interspersed with the mundane observations of users on her news feed, prompting her to wonder whether these people\u00a0are activists or are they merely following a digital trend?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/I-speak-emoji.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-25871\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/I-speak-emoji.jpg?resize=580%2C587\" alt=\"I speak emoji\" width=\"580\" height=\"587\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/I-speak-emoji.jpg?w=700&amp;ssl=1 700w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/I-speak-emoji.jpg?resize=296%2C300&amp;ssl=1 296w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/I-speak-emoji.jpg?resize=100%2C100&amp;ssl=1 100w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/I-speak-emoji.jpg?resize=600%2C607&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/I-speak-emoji.jpg?resize=680%2C688&amp;ssl=1 680w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/I-speak-emoji.jpg?resize=300%2C303&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a><em>&#8216;I Speak Emoji&#8217;, Celina Teague<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Everyone wants to tell a story &#8211; you, me, journalists, Isis &#8211; we all want to play with this new system of editing and uploading our story to an instant audience.&#8221; This influenced\u00a0her painting, \u2018I am no one, just a little vagina&#8217;, a response to the kidnapping of 276 girls from Chibok. This image exemplifies her main issue of hashtag activism, over a million people tweeted #BringBackOurGirls but\u00a0did these tweets motivate people to get up from their chairs and affect change, or were they nothing but tweets?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/I-am-no-one.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-25872\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/I-am-no-one.jpg?resize=580%2C513\" alt=\"I am no one\" width=\"580\" height=\"513\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/I-am-no-one.jpg?w=700&amp;ssl=1 700w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/I-am-no-one.jpg?resize=300%2C265&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/I-am-no-one.jpg?resize=600%2C530&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/I-am-no-one.jpg?resize=680%2C601&amp;ssl=1 680w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a><em>&#8216;I am no one, just a little vagina&#8217;, Celina Teague<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Teague explains that these social injustices continue long after our tweets, posts, and instagram images have fallen further down our newsfeeds.
