Songs in the major key, ostensibly sweet; but listen a little more intently and the words reveal something altogether darker, more disturbing and bitter. I like play between light and shade and so these juxtapositions appeal to me; the irony sown by this lyrical dissonance and the tension created.<\/p>\n<p>My name is Luka\/<br \/>\nI live on second floor\/<br \/>\nI live upstairs from you\/<br \/>\nYes, I think you\u2019ve seen me before<\/p>\n<p>Suzanne Vega\u2019s 1987 release is catchy and melodic and easy to sing along to. Which in fact I did, when I was young; the catch is that it\u2019s a song about child abuse.<\/p>\n<p>If you hear something late at night\/ Some kind of trouble, some kind of fight\/ Just don\u2019t ask me what it was<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"680\" height=\"510\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VZt7J0iaUD0\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>While the opening sentence of The Flaming Lips\u2019 Do You Realize?? could launch any good mix-tape made for romancing &#8211; Do you realize, that you have the most beautiful face \u2013 the song is a meditation on the precariousness of life. Do you realize, that everyone you know someday will die.<\/p>\n<p>Gruff Rhys &#8211; Wales\u2019 answer to Wayne Coyne &#8211; employs clever wordplay in Hotel Shampoo\u2019s Honey All Over, a summery number that stings like a bee:<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s honey all over (it\u2019s over)\/<br \/>\nShe\u2019s honey all over (it\u2019s all over honey)\/<br \/>\nShe\u2019s honey all over (and she\u2019s also over you)<\/p>\n<p>The video for it is pleasingly bizarre:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"680\" height=\"510\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/d52ngGczZDU\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Martha Wainwright\u2019s The Maker (\u2018Boiling some water to kill myself), Brother Rufus sings cheerfully about \u2019Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk\u2019 during a song that alludes to the serious drug addiction that temporarily sent him blind.<\/p>\n<p>The list goes on: the protagonist of The Killers\u2019 \u2018karaoke classic\u2019 clearly has his tongue firmly in his cheek when he wails \u2019I\u2019m Mr. Brightside\u2026\u2019 and many a Smiths tracks runs along jauntily, Morrissey underscoring it all with his own brand of chagrin misery. Inherently danceable, listenable or jaunty these \u2018bittersweet symphonies\u2019 are songs written from the perspective of the troubled, philosophical and disillusioned. Bands like Girls create beautiful songs and make them appealing names like Vomit.<\/p>\n<p>Even if the lyrics aren\u2019t chronically dark, depressing or disturbing, then singers such as Jimmy Webb will leave us on a suitably sweet note; MacArthur Park was a song that played over again as I served coffee and tiffin as a teenager in Rainbow\u2019s End Caf\u00e9. I was thrilled one day when the totally surreal lyrics suddenly clicked for me as they percolated through the sweeping layers of plush orchestration. I love the weird melodrama of it all, so sing along with me now:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMacArthur\u2019s Park is melting in the dark\/<br \/>\nAll the sweet green icing flowing down\/<br \/>\nSomeone left the cake out in the rain\/<br \/>\nI don\u2019t think that I can take it\/<br \/>\n\u2018Cause it took so long to bake it\/<br \/>\nAnd I\u2019ll never have that recipe again, oh no!<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"680\" height=\"510\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GHS8hj4TdT8\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>By Imogen Eveson<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>songs with a split personality \ufffc One of my favourite recipes for a song is one that is two-fold.
