The\u00a0intense relationship between Britain and India in the late nineteenth century and the\u00a0early\u00a0twentieth\u00a0century was one ruled by political disputes, but in the\u00a0shadows\u00a0of the political uproar beautiful\u00a0colours\u00a0and\u00a0intricate\u00a0patterns\u00a0dominated\u00a0the\u00a0aesthetics. The British Raj was a time of great beauty and romantic influences in Indian fashion. Taking inspiration from this time, Boden have created a second collection of ‘Boden Icons’ for\u00a0Spring 2016.\u00a0Edwardian\u00a0elegance meets the opulence of India with sari inspired florals and golden\u00a0embroidery, for a romantic- military look A stand out skirt, following on from last season’s ‘Brigadier’ is a perfect blend of Raj and Red carpet styles, featuring a sharp front split and gold military frogging.

An insight into\u00a0the time of the\u00a0British\u00a0Raj has been seen\u00a0recently\u00a0across\u00a0television\u00a0and\u00a0literature.\u00a0A\u00a0popular\u00a0show on\u00a0Channel 4,\u00a0‘Indian Summers’\u00a0details the events of summers\u00a0spent by a group of British\u00a0socialites\u00a0at\u00a0Simla, in the foothill of the Himalayas, set in 1932\u00a0at the height of the British\u00a0Raj.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0obsession\u00a0with this time period is also seen in\u00a0Joan Khurody’s work. Firstly in her book ‘No-One Mentioned Bandits’<\/a>,\u00a0that takes on her personal account of\u00a0a young English girl who married an Indian and went to live in a small North Indian town.<\/p>\n

“Alone, in the middle of a huge, unknown, perhaps unknowable country which until then had been a mere triangle on a map, she sat on the steps of an unpromising new home and wondered how she would get through the days ahead. She had left a family, a hoped for career and all her familiar ways. This was a daunting undertaking and most of her relatives and friends were certain\u00a0that it would end in failure.”<\/p>\n

In a less personal account Joan revisits the time of British Imperialism.\u00a0‘Into the Night with a Stranger’<\/a> is a work of fiction with an authentic background based on her personal experiences. The leading character reflects herself in some ways, marrying an\u00a0Indian\u00a0and living in\u00a0India. ‘Into the Night with a Stranger’ has a deeper, darker outcome,\u00a0exaggerating\u00a0real life events. Joan explained<\/p>\n

“It should appeal to readers who have enjoyed recent films and TV documentaries about expats experimenting with life in India, those who are fascinated by other cultures and those who like their stories fast-paced but emotionally moving. There are some elements directly inspired by my life but fiction allows me to explore the difficulties and taboos of cultural and racial interaction more openly than in any personal story.”
