Although war art can sometimes be romanticised and seem unrealistic, we sometimes can still interpret paintings in the same way as photographs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em><strong>Origins of war art:<\/strong><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0An early painting <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">depicted war was <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Liberty Leading the People<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by artist Eugene Delacroix from 1830. The painting <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">memorialised <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">France\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">July Revolution. The painting showcases a woman personifying the concept and the goddess of liberty, leading people forward. This early painting is a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">glorified depiction of how the Romantics wanted war to be interpreted.<img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-32524 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/image-3.png?resize=580%2C410\" alt=\"image (3)\" width=\"580\" height=\"410\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/image-3.png?w=700&amp;ssl=1 700w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/image-3.png?resize=300%2C212&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/image-3.png?resize=600%2C424&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/image-3.png?resize=680%2C480&amp;ssl=1 680w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The transition of war art in the 19<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0century to the 20<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0century onwards,was more naturalistic, honest and sombre<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is shown<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the colours that the artists used and the scenarios they chose to interpret.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A prime example of an anti-war painting is Pablo Picasso\u2019s 1937 painting <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guernica<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Being known to not voice his political views,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0the painting does not show war as a victorious subject, but more <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a cry for help. The painting <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a response to the bombings on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Spanish town <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guernica<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brought worldwide attention to the Spanish Civil War. The painting\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is said to be Pablo Picasso\u2019s warning that the suffering his people endured was causing destruction, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">humanity needs to be united as one.<img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32523\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/image-2.png?resize=580%2C410\" alt=\"image (2)\" width=\"580\" height=\"410\" \/><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Waltz with Bashir<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the animated war docu-film directed by Ari Folman,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">depicts an Israeli Soldier in search of his lost memory after the war. T<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he animated film gained much success and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ends with animation dissolving into real footage of the aftermath of the massacre. (sorry for the spoiler !) It brings the viewer back to reality and the illustrations dark colours and shadows are more surreal and nightmarish.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>War Art in the 21st Century:<\/strong><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0:<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/War-Artists-Afghanistan-Beyond-Wire\/dp\/1851497889\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018War artists in Afghani<br \/>\nstan\u2019-\u2018Beyond the Wire\u2019<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0showcases the work of Jules George and a \u00a0combination of four other war \u00a0artists\u2019 experiences in the beginning of the most gruesome year for British troops in 2010. The water colours, oil paintings and moving sketches are true experiences and capture the miscellaneous moments of the Afghanistan war and more.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their work aims to capture the vast landscapes of Afghanistan and\u00a0the soldiers out in patrol, in addition Jules puts his work in perspective as he tells a story about painting and sketching in such an intense battlefield.<img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32522\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/image-1.png?resize=580%2C820\" alt=\"image (1)\" width=\"580\" height=\"820\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/image-1.png?w=700&amp;ssl=1 700w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/image-1.png?resize=212%2C300&amp;ssl=1 212w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/image-1.png?resize=600%2C848&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/image-1.png?resize=680%2C961&amp;ssl=1 680w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/image-1.png?resize=300%2C424&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/>This war book is truly poignant and subjective; with the use of the dark and dingy colours, it reflects a mood appropriate of the war. The paintings have a feel of brutality, and sheer truth. They use the delicacy and intricacy of painting and transfer the gruesomeness of war as if it were a photograph.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Demi Bailey
