STOP 24"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.swatch.com\">Swatch<\/a> the internationally renowned Swiss watch brand are well known<\/span>\u00a0for supporting the arts through a broad variety of\u00a0initiatives, whether this be collaborations with\u00a0artists for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.swatch.com\/en_gb\/collections\/swatch-and-art\">Swatch Art Special watches<\/a>, to large prizes for emerging artists, even an art residency in ShangHai. In fact their credentials in fashion, art and music, it&#8217;s fair to say, are well documented.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The current collaboration is with German artist\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pilarcorrias.com\/artists\/tobias-rehberger\/\"><strong style=\"font-style: inherit;\">Tobias Rehberger<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>for a work entitled\u00a0<strong style=\"font-style: inherit;\">\u201c24 Stops Rehberger Weg\u201d. <\/strong>This is<strong style=\"font-style: inherit;\">\u00a0<\/strong>an &#8216;Art-Walk&#8217; across the border between Switzerland\u00a0and Germany, \u00a0a six-kilometre path meandering through countryside from the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fondationbeyeler.ch\/en\/Home\">Fondation Beyeler\u00a0<\/a>to the\u00a0<a href=\"www.design-museum.de\">Vitra Design\u00a0Museum<\/a>. Think <a href=\"http:\/\/www.richardlong.org\">Richard Long<\/a> meets <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pop_art\">Pop Art<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The \u00a024 sculptural objects dotted along the route (excuse the pun) are rooted in nature and include a group of broken bird cages, a Cuckoo clock, a water fountain, a wind vane, all items that relate to the natural environment in which they sit. \u00a0However and it&#8217;s a big however, Rehbergers nature\u00a0inspired pieces have more than a touch of \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Memphis_Group\">Ettore Sottsass Memphis design <\/a>(candy block colours) meets <a href=\"http:\/\/www.waltervanbeirendonck.com\">Walter Van Bierndonk<\/a>\u00a0about them than say the work of the walking artists such as <a href=\"http:\/\/http:\/\/www.richardlong.org\/\">Richard Long<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.goldsworthy.cc.gla.ac.uk\/\">Andy Goldsworthy <\/a>whose pieces have a direct relation with nature. The candy colour installations dotted through the walk are not what would ordinarily be expected to be scattered through country villages yet surprise and delight, if not make the viewer laugh out loud.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Screen-Shot-2016-07-08-at-17.01.58-copy.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-33756\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Screen-Shot-2016-07-08-at-17.01.58-copy.jpg?resize=580%2C435\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2016-07-08 at 17.01.58 copy\" width=\"580\" height=\"435\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Screen-Shot-2016-07-08-at-17.01.58-copy.jpg?w=763&amp;ssl=1 763w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Screen-Shot-2016-07-08-at-17.01.58-copy.jpg?resize=300%2C224&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Screen-Shot-2016-07-08-at-17.01.58-copy.jpg?resize=400%2C300&amp;ssl=1 400w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Screen-Shot-2016-07-08-at-17.01.58-copy.jpg?resize=600%2C449&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Screen-Shot-2016-07-08-at-17.01.58-copy.jpg?resize=680%2C509&amp;ssl=1 680w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">And that is what makes this work so engaging. Engaging it is, as it has by its very (again excuse the pun) nature an interactive lightness mixed with humour, which allows for a real level of contemplation from its somewhat colourful and absurdness\u00a0through, to its very point; to make you stop, stare and think.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Over a length of five kilometres, the core ideal of the work from the perspective of the \u00a0artist, was to create a guiding system between <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fondationbeyeler.ch\/en\/Home\" target=\"_blank\">Fondation Beyeler<\/a> in Switzerland to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.design-museum.de\/en\/information.html\" target=\"_blank\">Vitra Design\u00a0Museum<\/a> in Germany which includes walking across the border. The initial idea was not in fact from the artist but was the starting point of his brief.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The Artist<strong style=\"font-style: inherit;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pilarcorrias.com\/artists\/tobias-rehberger\/\"> Tobias Rehberger<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>thought about how road style signs could be used on a trail but realised this was not enough, and chose to use art-objects to guide walkers from one place to the other. From there he thought about what would be natural and even weird to have, and by doing so, throws out the subconscious questions of how we observe art? how this collection could have a second function, as well as, what are our preconceptions? how do we treat these objects? <strong style=\"font-style: inherit;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pilarcorrias.com\/artists\/tobias-rehberger\/\">Tobias Rehberger<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>said\u00a0<em>&#8220;I wanted to play with ideas of functional objects that may or may not be functional&#8221;.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Screen-Shot-2016-07-08-at-17.03.40-copy.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-33757\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Screen-Shot-2016-07-08-at-17.03.40-copy.jpg?resize=550%2C395\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2016-07-08 at 17.03.40 copy\" width=\"550\" height=\"395\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Screen-Shot-2016-07-08-at-17.03.40-copy.jpg?w=550&amp;ssl=1 550w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Screen-Shot-2016-07-08-at-17.03.40-copy.jpg?resize=300%2C215&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">His work has a real level of humour and the absurdist about it. \u00a0For example Birdcages that look like the bird made a forced exit through the wires, left hanging empty with a loss of function yet are still held on wires in the sky. \u00a0Function and no function?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Swatch_24Stops_event_4868.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-33759\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Swatch_24Stops_event_4868.jpg?resize=550%2C414\" alt=\"Swatch_24Stops_event_4868\" width=\"550\" height=\"414\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Swatch_24Stops_event_4868.jpg?w=550&amp;ssl=1 550w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Swatch_24Stops_event_4868.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pilarcorrias.com\/artists\/tobias-rehberger\/\"><strong style=\"font-style: inherit;\">Tobias Rehberger<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a> says\u00a0\u201c<em>Isn\u2019t every object basically whatever we project onto it?<\/em> ultimately the\u00a0function each piece does have is initially to point the walker in the right direction,\u00a0punctuating the route with surreal objects to follow.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #605e5f;\">So what can be expected as a walker exploring the route? The walk not only takes people from one country, one gallery, one municipality to another set, it meanders through fields, passes by rivers, crosses borders and passes in front and behind of peoples houses and gardens. \u00a0This makes for a some what intimate and personal journey for the individual walker. \u00a0It is for each person to have their own relationship with\u00a0<strong style=\"font-style: inherit;\">Tobias Rehberger&#8217;s\u00a0<\/strong>artworks but also with the surrounding countryside. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #605e5f;\">The fact that walkers have the opportunity to peer into the homes of the villages, see the gardens scattered with kids toys, the family cars, well maintained houses and gardens of this middle class cross section of Swiss and German families only adds to the surreal almost voyeuristic \u00a0experience. <\/span><span style=\"color: #605e5f;\">At once pondering why the artist presented each unique sculpture and why he may well have placed such a surreal piece at each junction, alongside the reasoning as to what each piece may well stand for. However, the very peaceful setting, on a relatively long and meandering walk, mostly allows for a deeper contemplation of self in comparison to the wider world and objects within it. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #605e5f;\">And what do the locals think? \u00a0those whose towns well may be invaded by walkers out to enjoy the &#8216;Art Walk? A<\/span>ll of those we met where in agreement that it was magnificent. Yet it is fair to say that art aficionados may have a very different reaction to the work than say those who enjoy a good walk.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">The spot where the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basel.com\/en\/Rehberger-Weg\" target=\"_blank\">Rehberger Trail<\/a> crosses the German-Swiss border is a large sculpture, a stack of tree trunks, lying on its side like a pile of timber at a mill, well maybe to be a little clear, a pile of tree trunks, painted in a cartoon style, lying on its side. Here during the official opening, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.swatch.com\">Swatch<\/a> launched the watch to go with the project and invited all the members of the surrounding villages to come drink a glass and eat a pretzel or two, in celebration. Swatch also invited their most avid of supporters to come and be the first to buy the new watch. Yes, they queued up at a giant cartoon log installation to purchase the new watch.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Swatch_24Stops_event_4881.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-33758\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Swatch_24Stops_event_4881.jpg?resize=500%2C750\" alt=\"Swatch_24Stops_event_4881\" width=\"500\" height=\"750\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Swatch_24Stops_event_4881.jpg?w=500&amp;ssl=1 500w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Swatch_24Stops_event_4881.jpg?resize=200%2C300&amp;ssl=1 200w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Swatch_24Stops_event_4881.jpg?resize=300%2C450&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Asking <span style=\"color: #000000;\">Swatch Creative\u00a0Director Carlo Giordanetti <\/span>what it was about an artist that makes them feel that they are right to collaborate with \u00a0the brand and he said:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;the criteria is that something grabs me, but that is the first level, then the aesthetic, I need to like the style of the work and I because the brand is very much about story telling I need to like the story behind the work.<\/em>&#8221; He went on to explain <em>&#8220;Because every watch from Swatch has its own story its own name and its own reason for being the way it is. \u00a0It&#8217;s not just based on a design development, there is always a theme then a title and each watch has a personality within that theme. \u00a0We know that some of the designs we do are not there to sell millions but they become a catalyser. Throughout our 34 year history, we as a brand we have always been telling stories<\/em>&#8221; So then why Tobias <em>&#8216;There is a boldness, I love the strength of his gesture, it&#8217;s in your face, strong, but after meeting him I realised he was a very tongue in cheek person, he has a soft touch with the boldness.
