Songful Weather"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"color: #454545;\">Almost everyone is intimately acquainted with the various sounds which breeze can create.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Maybe you have important memories or feelings associated with lying in bed with the distinctive whistling of nighttime gales outside your window, or perhaps you\u2019re more attached to the gentle rustlings of plants and trees. \u00a0The beautiful thing about breeze is that it can be heard in so many different scenarios and environments, which gives rise to an infinite number of human interpretations.\u00a0 Many musical artists have harnessed wind in a variety of forms to evoke feelings connected place, time, atmosphere, or states of mind.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #454545;\">A large portion of these compositions actually contain real recordings of wind and manipulate these sounds to craft something entirely new. \u00a0The works of Norwegian composer Jana Winderen are a prime example.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Utilising field recordings stemming from a variety of settings, Winderen&#8217;s pieces offer listeners the chance to embark on a journey across vast, intricately detailed sonic landscapes which reflect astonishing natural environments.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Many of these environments explored by the\u00a0pieces are rarely or never experienced by listeners, adding a layer of mystique and immersion to the recordings.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YNAcRveixNI\" width=\"560\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #454545;\">Her 2010 work <em>Energy Field<\/em>, for example, presents an edited collage of\u00a0recordings from the marine and glacial\u00a0environments\u00a0of Greenland, Norway, and the Barents Sea. \u00a0These regions are home to unique varieties of weather and wildlife which regularly produce sounds unheard of by the average person. \u00a0The ambient wind effects heard in the piece are anything but everyday, being juxtaposed with sounds recorded from deep glacial crevasses, Arctic animals mating or hunting, and ocean waves crashing upon cracking ice. \u00a0These contexts give completely new\u00a0meanings\u00a0to breeze, demonstrating the unique sonic space it occupies in a part of the world entirely different from our own.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #454545;\">Unlike Winderen, who uses real field recordings in her works, many\u00a0other composers have recreated\u00a0the sounds\u00a0of wind through instrumental interpretations. \u00a0Many of these interpretations correspond to personal experiences, history, or\u00a0even\u00a0other pieces of art.<\/span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\" style=\"color: #454545;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #454545;\">Among these composers is Toru Takemitsu, whose seminal work <em>And I Knew \u2018Twas The Wind<\/em>\u00a0captures the auditory, physical, and emotional sensations associated with wind.<\/span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\" style=\"color: #454545;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #454545;\">Inspired by an Emily Dickinson poem from which the piece takes its name, Takemitsu&#8217;s instrumentation and compositional techniques sonically recreate a close reading of the poem and embody its abundant mixture of nature-specific imagery. <\/span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\" style=\"color: #454545;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IPFvrKR5KUo\" width=\"560\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Arranged solely for a trio of flute, viola, and harp, the piece emulates the chills of\u00a0wintery winds through high-pitched viola harmonics and sudden flute trills. \u00a0This serves to both recreate the sounds of wind, but also establish\u00a0the same physical and mental reactions in listeners. \u00a0The sudden transformations in texture not only reflect the natural environment, but also the way the human consciousness tends to flow in a way much like the wind.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/438px-Toru_Takemitsu_Shinchosha_1961-7.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-58440\" 580px\" \/><\/a>Toru Takemitsu, 1961<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #454545;\">Other musicians have used wind as inspiration because it has played\u00a0a vital role in their\u00a0everyday lives, creating a very deep and personal connection with their compositions.
