Listening to music can be considered\nin this day and age one of the world\u2019s favourite pastimes. Whether it be\nsomething we permanently carry around with us, or the tracks we listen to in\nthe privacy of our own homes, engaging with music has come a long way since\ncommercial recordings first became available in the mid-20th<\/sup>\ncentury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Think back to throwing away our old\nboxy televisions and replacing them with those new sleek flat screens, just\nlike the process of getting rid of large pieces of sound technology \u2013 with\nexcessive wires connecting boxes running throughout the room \u2013 to where we are now with small and wireless Bluetooth\nportable speakers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Technology gets better with every\ninvention, and thankfully, it also has got a lot smaller at the same time. But\nhow did we get here? When did the journey towards such a personal relationship\nwith music begin? We\u2019re not just talking here of HiFi systems with\nspeakers: what about the speakers in our telephones and cinema halls? Perhaps,\nthe sounds we engage with daily have more curious origins than we normally give\nthem credit for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The world began to utilise the very first\npiece of music technology when Joham Philipp Reis<\/em> developed a concept\nof a speaker to enhance his telephone conversations in 1816. The next major\nstep was when Alexander Graham Bell<\/em> developed an electric loudspeaker\nin 1877, followed in 1899 by Thomas Edison’s<\/em> British patented horn\nwith a compressed air amplifying mechanism. There were several intelligent\nand knowledgeable scientists trying to patent and develop their versions of\nloudspeakers. And then Chester Rice<\/em> and Edward Kellogg<\/em>\npatented the moving coil principle \u2013 which was used until relatively recently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With companies like Bell Telephone\nLaboratories and Siemens, audio amplifiers first came into the picture, which\ncreated a requirement for loudspeakers to go with them. However, the first\nspeakers were designed by telephone engineers and were basically loud-speaking\nreceivers for telephones, and as such they lacked the sensitivity required for\nhigh-quality sound. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Did you know that the first\nfeature-length movie with synchronised sounds came out in 1927? Before that,\nmotion films were entirely visual. \nTheatre owners hired a pianist or organist or, in\nlarge urban theatres, a full orchestra to play the music that fit the\nmood of the film at any given moment, to somewhat leave the viewers with more\nthan just the audible turbulence of the projector for a \u2018soundtrack\u2019. But by\nthe 1930\u2019s. all movies started to incorporate synchronised sound and dialogue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The next step was to bring clarity and\nquality to the sound experience. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, more popularly known as\nMGM, began in the 1930’s to combine two or three sound drivers to increase\nfrequency response and sound pressure. And came up with the first film\nindustry-standard loudspeaker system, calling it the Shearer Horn. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the 1950s, with the development of Kodak 8mm film and a portable movie projector with a portable screen \u2013 often without sound \u2013 we saw the earliest forms of what we now call home theatre. However, these were seen almost solely in the houses of the very affluent, particularly those in the film industry. Portable home cinemas improved over time with colour film, Kodak Super 8mm film cartridges, and monaural sound, but remained unpolished and fairly rare. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The following period, nevertheless,\nsaw huge growth and many changes within the industry. Take, for example, the story\nof the Spendor speaker: Mr Spencer Hughes worked for the BBC’s sound\nengineering department and developed the first monitor speakers in the\n1960s. He went on to make his own loudspeaker and called it the BC1. This\ngame-changing design quickly became the monitor of choice for broadcasters and\nrecording studios worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With evolving tech, radio, and better\namplifier designs 20th Century Fox Film Corporation<\/em> became masters of\nhigh-fidelity sound systems. A man named Ray Dolby in London, patented a\nNoise Reduction System in 1969 and Dolby<\/em> Laboratories<\/em> first\nemerged onto the scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the 1970s, the VCR or Videocassette\nrecorder, as the name suggests, recorded audio and video onto a removable\nmagnetic tape, and became extremely popular. It became more important to\ndevelop better audio for both cinemas and home systems, which began a\nrevolution in the quality of movie sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
George Lucas teamed up\nwith Dolby Laboratories, and together they engineered what would be the\nfirst in a line of hugely significant collaborations \u2013 Dolby Stereo. For\nthe first time, sound effects were emitted from four channels. Dolby Stereo is\none of the first innovations in a long line that now includes Dolby Digital 5.1\nand many other worthy contributions to the audio industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You must have heard about cassette\nplayers and boomboxes, or perhaps you even still own a CD and DVD player at\nyour home? However, another era of home theatre started with the DVD-video\nformat, the Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound system and large TV sets. These\nhave now changed to flat-screen 3D-TV sets with high-resolution Blu-ray discs\nand Dolby’s fantastic surround sound systems into the 1990s and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is at that this point in the story,\nthat we find ourselves in the 21st century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It has been a long yet\nremarkably fruitful journey to where we are now. These are just a few small\nsteps that have brought us where we are today, with the excellent quality of\nsound we can now achieve within the comforts of our own home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Indeed, we do not usually acknowledge\nthe full story, or the gifts of design and science that lie behind our daily\nuse of technology. We now think of the future, with AI and Chatbots granting us\ninstantaneous knowledge from all around the world on a little transportable\nspeaker in our houses, where our forefathers struggled even to have a telephone\ncall. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
VIZIO, the American-based\nelectronics company, largely known for their Smart TV sets, concluded rightly that\nconsumers weren\u2019t satisfied with their TVs\u2019 tiny speakers, and wanted more. So,\nit has come up with a series of vastly superior options that are as impressive\nfor their affordability as they are for the vast scale of their improvement\nover an ordinary TV\u2019s sound. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Once again, audio pioneers Dolby Labs\nhave a part to play in this story: Just like VIZIO, Dolby is based in San\nFrancisco, and the two companies work closely together to develop the best\npossible implementation of Dolby\u2019s latest and most 21st<\/sup> century of\nsonic innovations \u2013 Dolby Atmos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Atmos is another incredible\ntechnological upgrade, adding \u2018height channels\u2019 to standard Dolby Digital\nsurround sound, creating for the first time a totally 100% immersive\nthree-dimensional \u2018sound-field\u2019 in which you can hear sounds and objects move\nwith incredible precision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dolby launched Atmos in 2012. But until now,\nsound systems that can carry the dynamism of Atmos haven’t been available at low-cost.
