They impose an environmental cost when they\u2019re made and disposed of, and they need to be reused again and again if they\u2019re going to offset these costs. With that said, if you already have an artificial tree in the house, then this cost is already sunk. If you\u2019re shipping a package over a long distance, then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parcel2go.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">choosing a reputable parcel delivery service<\/a>. You\u2019ll be able to track its progress, and in the process become more mindful of how much you\u2019re emitting along the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Light Sensibly<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re in the market for Christmas lights this year, then bear in mind that you\u2019re going to be running these lights for several Christmases to come. Hyper-efficient <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energysavingtrust.org.uk\/home-energy-efficiency\/lighting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">LED bulbs<\/a> will save you money; go for something stylish and warm-white, that way you can use your fairy-lights throughout the year, draped across the back of your sofa to create a cosy space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Wrap Sensibly<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some of the more glittery, ostentatious wrapping paper\nis infused with foil, plastic and other elements which can\u2019t be recycled. Every\nyear, British households throw away mountains of this stuff \u2013 and all of it\neventually finds its way to a hole in the ground somewhere. Look for a\nrecyclable solution instead. You might even take it upon yourself to spruce up\nsome standard parcel paper!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Shop Sensibly<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Christmas is a time of excess. As such, we\u2019re likely to relax (or entirely dispense with) our ethical concerns for the duration of the season. Even households with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbcgoodfood.com\/recipes\/collection\/vegan-christmas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">vegans<\/a> in them are unlikely to get rid of the turkey, however, environmentally disastrous turkey-farming might be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With a little bit of planning, you\u2019ll be able to\nreduce the miles travelled by your food, and the amount of landmass and water\nused in its manufacture. Make sure also that you get maximum mileage from the\nfood you buy. Clear a space in your freezer and use it to store all of your\nleftovers for consumption over January and February.
