\u201cDr Crenshaw?\u201d<\/p>\n

Dr Crenshaw lowered the newspaper she was hiding behind, and fixed the intern with as neutral a gaze as she could muster. \u201cYes, Tom?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat sign,\u201d Tom said, pointing a ketchup-splattered finger, \u201cWotsit mean?\u201d<\/p>\n

Tom had been told \u2013 nay encouraged – the first day at the Institute, to ask as many questions as he needed. It was the usual advice given to help wide-eyed post-grads over their nerves. Only, it appeared Tom had no nerves, and no off switch either.<\/p>\n

\u201cP S N F?\u201d Dr Crenshaw said. \u201cIt stands for \u2018Perfectly Safe Nuclear Fusion\u2019\u201d She quickly raised her paper again, but not quickly enough.<\/p>\n

\u201cIs it?\u201d As usual with Tom, one question, answered, inevitably led to another question, and another, and another… Was this how such a weak candidate had scored one of the most sought-after placements? Had his supervisor been willing to do anything \u2013 anything at all \u2013 to get rid of him?<\/p>\n

\u201cIs it what?\u201d she said with a small sigh.<\/p>\n

\u201cPerfectly safe\u201d Tom asked, a droplet of his spittle darkening her newsprint.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou could look at it this way: it\u2019s as dangerous as solar power.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSolar power isn\u2019t dangerous at all!\u201d protested Tom.<\/p>\n

\u201cTell that to Icarus.\u201d<\/p>\n

He laughed, a small something that for a microsecond had her warming to her unasked-for and unwanted intern, until she noticed that a fragment of his noisily eaten lunch had now also landed on her paper. \u201cBut, really. Is it safe?\u201d<\/p>\n

Normally the Icarus quote ended the conversation. But not with Tom.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell. It\u2019s nuclear power, obtained by super heating plasma to temperatures twenty times that of the heart of the sun. But as the plasma blows itself apart if containment fails, a fusion reaction can\u2019t go critical in the way a fission nuclear reactor can. And compared to the global dangers of burning fossil fuels, it\u2019s very safe.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut not perfectly?\u201d<\/p>\n

Like a dog, worrying a toy that has long ago stopped squeaking, thought Dr Crenshaw. \u201cNo. \u201cPerfectly safe\u201d is our stated goal \u2013 no fatalities in the pursuit of nuclear fusion.\u201d<\/p>\n

Surprisingly, Tom didn\u2019t seem to have a follow up question to this, so Dr Crenshaw picked up her paper and went back to thinking about the accident that would happen that very afternoon as Tom was cleaning the fuel injectors deep in the heart of the reactor. Regrettable, very regrettable. But entirely necessary.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
