One last day
\nto hang on to.
\nThe house had to be naked,
\nbroom clean, they said;
\nmemories swept and bagged.<\/p>\n

Broom clean meant
\nsome dusty dream could
\nlinger in the corners.<\/p>\n

The paint peeled
\nfour times,
\nthe roof turned from
\ngray to red,
\nthe old heap
\ncoughed and groaned,
\nits tires peeled and burst,
\nall kept alive
\nby the magic
\nof a country garage.<\/p>\n

Fire flared
\none summer
\nin the sun porch.<\/p>\n

It costs so much to put out,
\nyet damaged nothing.<\/p>\n

We buried our favorite dog
\nout back
\nunder a headstone,
\nmade of a Judge’s
\nfallen car tag:
\n“Supreme Court,” it read,
\n“Supreme Cou,”
\nwhen we finished filing.
\nWe\u2019d called him Koo,
\nsupreme he had been,
\na bull of a dog; dead,
\nand broom clean now.<\/p>\n

The furniture was sturdy,
\nacquired from
\na seller of used
\nthings people needed,
\nafter they
\nweren’t wanted.<\/p>\n

Thing we once bought
\nfor hundreds of pounds
\nin deals hard as the
\nknots in veneer<\/p>\n

Did our entire home
\nfit in that little haul-away van?<\/p>\n

I swept the broom
\nclean house,
\nand found the
\nshipping bill
\nsailed under the door.<\/p>\n

We left; we left dust
\nwe called memories.
\nTo linger in the corners.
\nSecond hand stuff all,
\nbrought only 50 pounds
\nbeds that kept our
\nnightmares snug,
\nsofas our
\ndreams content.<\/p>\n

Our kids dealt
\ntheir childhood,
\nour dog his being,
\nwe our youth,
\nin that broom clean house,
\nso very far
\nfrom the casinos
