SS20"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/centmagazine.co.uk\/?p=63016&amp;preview=true&amp;_thumbnail_id=63020\">Ba<\/a><\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/centmagazine.co.uk\/intro-twenty-for-ss20\/?_thumbnail_id=63020\"><strong>ck to contents page<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>By J A Hopper<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At twenty months, Zariah\nis an influencer, a supernova on every platform from Instagram to Twitter to Depop,\nwith followers well into six figures. @ZariahsMummy was formerly a stylist,\nthen a fashion PR, before maternity-leaving it all behind the day Zariah was\nborn. She fell in love with her daughter like falling down a well. Since her\nfirst hour on earth, Zee has been dressed, posed, styled, uploaded, and\nlike-like-liked, every day without fail for six hundred days. And all with love:\nwith so much care and attention and adulation that it truly embodies the\noriginal sense of the word <em>awesome<\/em>.\nAwesome like a Himalayan mountain. Awesome like a tropical storm. Awesome like\na lion taking down an elephant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To see one of the\nthousands of images of Zariah grinning with her tiny new teeth and tawny blonde\nmane, or batting at her organic hemp elephant, \u201cEffump\u201d (shoddy knockoffs\navailable on eBay, hastily assembled and shipped from Shenzhen) is to feel\nqueasily inadequate, whether you are a mum(preneur), a stylist, an influencer, or,\nincreasingly, just an ordinary person. Ironically, other toddlers are the only demographic\nimmune to Zariah\u2019s enormous sway, though they absolutely lose their minds about\nEffump: hence the brisk trade in Asian fakes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zariah\u2019s small, but she\u2019s big business. The revenue generated by sales of Zariah\u2019s Christmas 2018 pudding beanie alone (from her capsule fashion range in collaboration with Zara Baby) was enough to put her through university, even adjusting for inflation, as and when she chooses to go in 16 \u00bd years\u2019 time. Her first steps (in <em>that<\/em> iconic pink-and-red colourblock pinafore dress) were watched on YouTube over one billion times and made the TV news. Meghan and Prince Archie tweeted congratulations: he\u2019s already being touted as a prospective future husband. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zariah doesn\u2019t care: she\u2019s too busy grasping under the vintage Chesterfield sofa for cracker crumbs before they get vacuumed up. Usually, the cleaning lady\u2019s s too quick, and she\u2019s scared of the hoover. She likes Mummy\u2019s crackers better than the chewy organic crisps Mummy gives her. She likes Thomas trains better than Baby Bunting dolls, but HIT! Entertainment aren\u2019t paying for promotional consideration, so the crying, weeing, fully accessorized babies-for-babies are her featured toy this month: much more on-brand, anyway. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s a full-time job\nbeing Zee, but Zariah never complains and neither does her Mummy, whose stated\nmission is to \u201cfully explore the joy of motherhood with my guide, muse and\ngurgling guru.\u201d And a momentous new chapter awaits! Zariah\u2019s Mummy has recently\ntaken a step back from full-time, hands-on mothering duties, to give Zariah social\nopportunities with her peers: she\u2019s been enrolled in a five-star rated\nMontessori nursery (fees very much out of the question) and will be continuing\nher learning adventure there two days a week from today. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was a difficult\ndecision for Mummy, but after some intervention from Zariah\u2019s Daddy, who\nemphasized repeatedly that he would like at least <em>some<\/em> of his life back please, she was persuaded. Daddy also pointed\nout that in order to fully monetize Zee\u2019s multiple sponsorship opportunities,\ngrow her personal brand and lay firm foundations for her future, Mummy spending\nmore time on the business side of the operation was essential. Besides, \u201cZariah\ndeserves a bit of normality too.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zariah heard all this,\nbut she didn\u2019t understand it, especially the normality part. But in four hours,\nwhen she\u2019s got into a biting fight, eaten chocolate custard for the first time,\ncried twice, thrown up once, had Effump hurled across the room, made a new best\nfriend and immediately stolen a Thomas train from her, she will. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>J.A. Hopper<\/strong>\u2019s stories for Liars\u2019 League (<em>Mothers\u2019 Milk<\/em>,<em> We\/She<\/em> and <em>Father Figure<\/em>, featured a vampire cannibal baby, thousands of sentient dolls, and a woman in love with Peppa Pig\u2019s dad.
