He says, direct action is just another\nform of intimidation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; I glance at his helper. You can\nnever tell these days whether they are listening or not, but they are always\nlistening. I tell grandfather, you should be careful what you say out loud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; He says, what are they going to do\nto me? He says, they going to put me in a prison? He looks around the little\nroom. The door with its keypad. The single window, \u2018not to be opened\u2019. The bed\nthat automatically unfolds when you say \u2018time for bed, helper\u2019. The automatic\ncooker with its choice of three dishes \u2018for every meal\u2019. The chair, \u2018for your\ncomfort\u2019. The chair for your guest, \u2018supplementary seating may be available,\nplease ask your helper\u2019. They mean \u2018might be\u2019, grandfather always points out. I\nwonder if he\u2019s being ironic. The screen, which is always watching you, even\nwhen you\u2019re not watching it. I often wonder if grandfather\u2019s going to say\nsomething about that. God knows what that might be, ironic or not. The toilet\nunit, \u2018screened for your convenience\u2019, which grandfather says was them being\nironic when they designed it, though they\u2019ve forgotten that by now, and which\nopens when you utter your secret phrase, but not at grandfather\u2019s, \u2018helper, I\nneed a shit\u2019, however often he tries to re-programme it. He\u2019s been warned\nseveral times about using inappropriate language towards the helper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He asks, they going to rehabilitate me? I\nknow he\u2019s being ironic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I say, grandfather, nobody could\nrehabilitate you. He thinks I\u2019m being ironic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; To be honest, it\u2019s not what they\nmight do to grandfather that worries me. He\u2019s past the Age of Responsibility\nnow. I say, Grandfather, it\u2019s me who\u2019s going to get into trouble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; He shrugs and pulls his rueful face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; You\u2019ve got everything you need here, I say. He looks out of the window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"580\" height=\"719\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG_2272.jpg?resize=580%2C719\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-71860\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG_2272.jpg?w=683&amp;ssl=1 683w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG_2272.jpg?resize=242%2C300&amp;ssl=1 242w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG_2272.jpg?resize=323%2C400&amp;ssl=1 323w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Nobody walks in the garden. A robot\nmower that looks like a stack of dinner plates cuts the grass, precisely,\nwhenever stems poke their heads above an unseen parapet, measured in\nmillimetres. There\u2019s a laser beam, grandfather says, would cut your legs off,\nyou went out and walked on the lawn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; There\u2019s a robot picker clears fruit\noff the fruit trees. Drones fly in to destroy invasive insects and deliver\nliquid nutrients. Look at them, pissing on the grass, grandfather says. He\nsays, we used to have birds did all that stuff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; That\u2019s why you can\u2019t open the\nwindow, because of the drones and the fruit picker. It might interfere with the\nflight paths. The reflections off the glass might disrupt the guidance systems.\nOne of these days, grandfather says, I\u2018m going to open that window, and screw\nup the whole damn system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; I say, grandfather, that\u2019s not very\ncivilised. Neither of us is sure whether I\u2019m being ironic. Besides, I\u2019m not\nsure he could really do it. Nobody has opened a window here since the notices\nwent up, and that was before grandfather\u2019s time. Windows aren\u2019t made to open\nthese days. Only people grandfather\u2019s age know how to open a window these days,\nbut something tells me he won\u2019t have forgotten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Maybe it\u2019s locked, I say, the\nwindow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; No, he says. He grins. There\u2019s no\nlock on it. It\u2019s an old fashioned, mechanical lever. He laughs, which unsettles\nme. They haven\u2019t even bothered to disable it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Nobody knows how to use them, I say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; He says, nobody does what the signs\ntell them not to, whatever they know. He laughs again. Watch this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; \u2018Helper, open the window.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Nothing happens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; You see, he says, it doesn\u2019t even\nrecognise the request.
