Battle Company, 2nd Battalion Airborne of the 503rd US Infantry are currently undergoing a 15 month deployment in the Korengal Valley in the eastern province of Kunar in Afghanistan. The valley is an epicentre of the US fight against militant Islam in Afghanistan, and was previously held by the 10th Mountain Division. The Korengal valley is infamous as the site of the downing of a US helicopter. They look the way their mothers probably remember them.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timhetherington.com\/\">Tim Hetherington<\/a><\/p>\n<p>How to present war offers a conundrum. An artist must decide if a war is most suitably represented by atrocities: the rising causalities, distressed citizens and charging, steely soldiers. Recently, Jake Chapman, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.damienhirst.com\/\">Damien Hirst<\/a> and other notable names customised AK-47s to raise awareness for the <a href=\"http:\/\/peaceoneday.org\/\">Peace One Day<\/a> charity. They aimed to blunt an instrument of war and left connotations of the formidable weapon to make an impact.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/NYC116871_low-res.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7356\" alt=\"Jones practices his golf swing while at the main KOP firebase in the valley. April 2008.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thamesandhudson.com\/Afterwards\/9780500543986\">Afterwards<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thamesandhudson.com\/\">Thames &amp; Hudson<\/a>) \u2013 a collection of photography collected by Nathalie Herschdorfer &#8211; well known disasters and war zones, such as the Srebrenica massacre, are similarly absent in documentation. Herschdorfer instead leaves the desolate remnants to present a battle.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.timhetherington.com\/\">Tim Hetherington<\/a> has a different approach. July 2008. &#8216;Doc&#8217; Kelso sleeping.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The photographs are reproduced to varying scales and demonstrate the alienation of the soldiers in their baron, bloody landscape. It also documents the bond that develops between a infantry unit over the space of a year.<\/p>\n<p>As a centrepiece a three-channel video installation Sleeping Soldiers is a contradiction of the travesties and discord that awaits the soldiers upon waking. The installation offers visitors the chance to watch a conversation between Tim Hetherington and his creative collaborator <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sebastianjunger.com\/\">Sebastian Junger<\/a>. The conversation sheds light on Hetherington\u2019s approach to presenting war: allowing the tender humanity to radiate through the terrible actions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>AFGHANISTAN.
