It was dark but there was a big moon and she was wearing her long white nightgown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8211;<em>She went into the garage?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>-Yes, <\/em><\/strong>and the little girl pushed off the ground with her foot, pulling back on the chains, the swing going, the rusted chains squeaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">The too dark garage, afraid to turn the light on, afraid to wake them, and so she stumbled, even though she knew where it was\u2014exactly where it was, that which she had come for, and would not put off, not anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">&#8211;<strong><em>Did you see her come out of the garage?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">The girl looked, the squeak of the chains slowing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">&#8211;<strong><em>Rachael?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">She looked at the woman. She had something in her hand, but I couldn\u2019t see what it was.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">In the dark, she reached the workbench and placed a pitcher of lemonade and ice on it. She bent down and looked beneath the bench, her hand searching, and then finding a dusty, heavy jug. She struggled to lift it and bent over more, using both hands to place it on the bench.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">The swing was hardly moving now, just drifting, slowly, back-and-forth, as if there was a big moon up there, that very same moon, and it was dark, and it was quiet, and she was alone and waiting, and she\u2019d say, <strong><em>Momma.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">She looked at the woman, at her long hair. Her nice clothes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">&#8211;<strong><em>Your momma?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">&#8211;<strong><em>Yes.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">She looked at the house. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">&#8211;<strong><em>I think Daddie\u2019s upset because he was supposed to be watching her.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">&#8211;<strong><em>Is that what he said?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>-No, but I know he was.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized is-style-default\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/moon-1.jpg?resize=580%2C386\" alt=\"moon illustration \" class=\"wp-image-81655\" width=\"580\" height=\"386\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/moon-1.jpg?w=1024&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/moon-1.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/moon-1.jpg?resize=768%2C512&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>-Why?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>-Because he left his job so he could.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">&#8211;<strong><em>He was a teacher?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>-Yes, the only one and he taught us all.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>-Who\u2019s the teacher now?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>-It\u2019s a lady, but I don\u2019t go, so I don\u2019t know. My daddie teaches me here.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>-He does?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>-Yes, mostly, but not every day.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>-Was your daddie sleeping when your momma went outside?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>-He didn\u2019t wake up until we heard her fall in the hallway.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>-She left the garage?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>-Yes, but she was in there for a long time.&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">Sitting on the high wooden stool, her legs crossed, she sipped her mixed drink of lemonade and antifreeze. And in the dim blue light of the moon slipping through the side door window, she stared into the darkness of new hope, and she began to hum, <strong><em>\u2018You are my sunshine, my only sunshine. You make me happy, when skies are grey. You\u2019ll never know, dear, how much I love you.\u2019<\/em><\/strong> And she hummed on, her foot tapping on, the music in her head\u2014playing on, and she forced down another sip.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Johnny Cash - You are my Sunshine Original\" width=\"580\" height=\"435\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cGa3zFRqDn4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>-I should get supper going.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>-I can give you a hand.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>-That\u2019s all right.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>-No, I\u2019d like too, if that\u2019s all right?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>-Did your daddie talk to you about your momma?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>-Not too much. Would you like a cup of tea?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>-Yes, please. Thank you.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>-You\u2019re welcome. He just said, did I know she died of a broken heart?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>-A broken heart?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>-Yes, that\u2019s what he said. Because the world made her sad.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>-I\u2019m sorry.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>-That\u2019s okay. But it wasn\u2019t just the world that made her sad.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>-It wasn\u2019t?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>-No. She told me why.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>-She did?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>-Yes. She said, sometimes she got sad because another world, not this one, another one, would come and settle upon her. But I wasn\u2019t to worry because it would never come for me. She said she just knew, and I would be okay. She promised.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>-She said that?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>-Yes.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>-She promised?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>-Yes.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>-Do you worry about that?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">She looked at the woman: the state-sponsored woman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>-Rachael?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">She heard her name, but she wasn\u2019t there, she was on her swing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">Under a big moon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">That very same moon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">In the dark, in the quiet, waiting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4e5c3a\" class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">That calling. That pulling.
