For me, to be brazen is to be bold, undisguised and shameless but also stubborn, and it is this stubbornness that sees brutalism withstand a huge amount of criticism whilst maintaining a loyal band of followers. OMA\u2019s recently completed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.szse.cn\/main\/en\/\">Shenzhen Stock Exchange<\/a> is architecture that quite literally means business. It\u2019s brazen, bold, unembarrassed and even a little cheeky, nicknamed \u2018The Miniskirt\u2019 for the horizontal element that sits 36 metres above ground overshadowing a public space below. It\u2019s two grey boxes. Describe it and many will probably think of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.southbankcentre.co.uk\">Southbank Centre<\/a> and wonder why the hell we haven\u2019t given up on this type of thing. But this is the brutal liberated from its 1950s origins and blasted into some classy dystopian financial future. What looks like concrete from afar is in fact a structural grid overlayed with a glass skin, one that remains appropriately austere on an overcast day but becomes almost transparent at night. OMA aren\u2019t alone in showing that the brazen grey box can be inspiring: Japanese architect <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tadao-ando.com\/index_eng.html\">Tadao Ando<\/a> has been doing it for years. A few years after <a href=\"http:\/\/designmuseum.org\/design\/erno-goldfinger\/\">Ern\u0151 Goldfinger<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/plus.google.com\/104766503547515977267\/about?gl=uk&#038;hl=en\">Trellick Tower<\/a> went up in North Kensington (later becoming britpop\u2019s go-to music video backdrop), Ando\u2019s Azuma House graced Osaka, one of, if not the most austere residential project I\u2019ve ever come across. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/azuma_house-e1382441124772.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/centmagazine.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/azuma_house-1024x861.jpg?resize=580%2C487\" alt=\"Azuma House\" width=\"580\" height=\"487\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-8491\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<em>Image of Azuma House. Source: <a href=\"http:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3436\/3890107884_da1a2d204d_o.jpg\">farm4.staticflickr.com<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>This is brutalism in the extreme, going as far as to fetishise the marks left by the precast concrete\u2019s moulds, and yet it works to create spaces that are surprisingly sensitive. Ando\u2019s box slips into a tiny urban site, where its passive form appears anything but. No one can deny the raw power of a space like Ando\u2019s Church of the Light; this is the same attitude and material that has led to some of England\u2019s most despised architecture.
