Good, clean skincare really matters. Especially, as we see what bad skincare can do. Not just to us, but to our world. But when a company takes the ideas of what they sell, and takes it a step further by supporting others, it brings an added bonus. Helping others be seen is an important act.
From immersive packaging to bespoke bottle designs, BioEffect has worked with many artists, transforming skincare into sensorial art experiences, via collaborations where beauty meets meaning, and where science is inseparable from aesthetics. An added layer of joy to experience with skincare.
The brand was founded in 2010 by three Icelandic scientists following their innovation of producing a replica of human growth factors in barley, using plant biotechnology.
Their mission is to create pure, high-performance skincare using only the necessary ingredients, ensuring it is pure, clean, and clinically proven to be effective.
To mark its 10th anniversary, in 2020, they collaborated with celebrated visual artist Shoplifter / Hrafnhildur Arnardóttir to design a collectable EGF Serum bottle and sculptural stand. Inspired by obsidian, lava, and the black barley used in the brand’s production, the piece was a striking homage to the raw, elemental power of Icelandic nature.
Known for her dreamlike illustrations of flora and fauna, Kristjana S. Williams created a custom design using the hexagon as her central motif in her collaboration with the company in 2022. Mirroring both natural and scientific symmetry, her artwork, inspired by Icelandic wildlife and geothermal landscapes, wrapped each gift set in a story of Iceland’s wild beauty and Bioeffect’s plant-biotech roots.
In 2023, Icelandic multimedia artist Dodda Maggý brought her ongoing series DeCore to life, transforming visuals of blooming flora into intricate, music-inspired compositions. Her gift set designs fused nature, perception, and rhythm – delivering a sensory experience that reflected both BioEffect’s scientific elegance and its deep respect for nature.
2024 saw the holiday sets feature an exclusive partnership with contemporary artist Thordis Erla Zoëga, known for her boundary-blurring approach to art and design. Her work, titled Absorb, was inspired by the journey of BioEffect’s iconic EGF Serum, from the outer skin to the cellular level. The result was a mesmerising packaging design that interpreted the brand’s clean, scientific identity through a vibrant, sculptural lens.
And for this coming year, 2025, Ása Steinar’s holiday season, with BioEffect, sees the renowned Icelandic adventure photographer show her dramatic imagery, which captures the untouched beauty of Iceland.
Her breathtaking visuals, featured across this year’s holiday gift sets, embody the brand’s values of purity, power, and the elegance of nature. Delivering a gift experience that transports users to the raw Icelandic landscapes that inspire the brand’s biotech innovation.
The EGF Serum is a groundbreaking, award-winning, age-defying biotech serum that helps prevent and target signs of skin ageing while enhancing moisture levels. This hero product is celebrating 15 years with a Special Edition set that features the award-winning EGF Serum, which has been recognised by WWD in 2024 as one of the “100 Greatest Skincare Products of All Time.”
The unique anniversary Special Edition comes in a uniquely designed box by Icelandic artist Heiðdís Helgadóttir, featuring Brennisóley (meadow buttercups), which bloom across Iceland during the summer.
Formulated with only 7 pure ingredients, including the signature BIOEFFECT EGF (Epidermal Growth Factor), a skin-rejuvenating protein that helps support skin’s natural production of collagen to keep skin looking smooth, firm and healthy. This hero product and wonder serum is a gentle yet powerful formula, suitable for all skin types, delivering exceptional results.
Each collaboration reflects a shared love of nature, science, and artistic integrity, redefining skincare as something not only powerful but meaningful, something to keep, cherish, and display. After all, great beauty is a superpower, whether it be a person or a picture.
The 2025 artist collaboration with Ása Steinars will be available this holiday season at select retailers and online at www.bioeffect.com. With thanks to Emily and all at AMN
